H-1B Visa Industrial Hygienist Jobs
Industrial Hygienist roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health, or a closely related field. Employers in manufacturing, construction, consulting, and government contracting regularly file LCAs for this role. CIH certification strengthens your petition by reinforcing the specialty occupation argument.

Verify your CIH credential supports specialty occupation
USCIS scrutinizes industrial hygienist petitions because some employers accept non-degree candidates. A Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential paired with a relevant bachelor's degree makes the specialty occupation argument significantly harder to challenge at adjudication.
Search LCA filings in OFLC Wage Search
Filter OFLC Wage Search by SOC code 29-9011 to see which employers have filed certified LCAs for industrial hygienist roles. This tells you who has already established the prevailing wage and navigated DOL approval for this specific occupation.
Target federal contractors with OSHA compliance needs
Federal contractors in defense, aerospace, and construction operate under mandatory OSHA and EPA compliance requirements, creating consistent demand for full-time industrial hygienists. These employers also tend to have established H-1B sponsorship processes and legal support in place.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified H-1B sponsors
Filter by industrial hygienist roles on Migrate Mate to see employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for this occupation. You'll avoid cold-applying to companies that have never sponsored the role, which saves time during a 60-day grace period job search.
Clarify whether the role is cap-exempt before accepting
Universities, research institutions, and certain nonprofits affiliated with higher education are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition bypasses the annual lottery. For industrial hygienists at these institutions, sponsorship can begin any time of year without waiting for the April filing window.
Confirm prevailing wage level matches your responsibilities
DOL assigns wage levels I through IV based on job complexity and supervision. If your role involves designing exposure monitoring programs or advising regulatory compliance strategy, request Level III or IV in the LCA. A lower wage level misrepresenting a senior role can trigger an RFE.

Find Industrial Hygienist JobsIndustrial Hygienist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an industrial hygienist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer requires at least a bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health, environmental science, or a closely related field. The key is the job description: if the posting allows any bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, USCIS may issue an RFE challenging specialty occupation status. Employers should draft job requirements carefully, and CIH certification further reinforces the degree requirement argument.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for industrial hygienists most consistently?
Manufacturing, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, federal defense contracting, and environmental consulting firms file LCAs for industrial hygienists most regularly. These sectors operate under ongoing OSHA, EPA, and DOT compliance obligations that require full-time hygienists rather than contract staffing. You can confirm employer-specific LCA history for SOC code 29-9011 through Migrate Mate, which surfaces verified sponsorship data by role.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage apply to industrial hygienist roles?
DOL assigns a prevailing wage based on your geographic work location and job complexity level (I through IV). Industrial hygienists in senior roles involving program design, regulatory reporting, or team oversight typically fall at Level III or IV. Your employer files an LCA certifying the offered wage meets or exceeds the applicable prevailing wage before USCIS will approve the H-1B petition.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new industrial hygienist employer mid-status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition with USCIS, without waiting for approval. The new role must still qualify as a specialty occupation in industrial hygiene. Keep copies of your current LCA and approval notice, as the new employer's attorney will need them to establish continuity of status.
Does O*NET classify industrial hygienist as a specialty occupation?
O*NET classifies industrial hygienist (SOC 29-9011) as a Job Zone 4 occupation, meaning most positions require a four-year bachelor's degree in a specific field. USCIS petitions often reference O*NET classifications as evidence that the occupation normally requires a degree. Employers and immigration attorneys routinely cite this in the H-1B support letter to address the specialty occupation standard.
