H-1B Visa Senior Test Engineer Jobs
Senior Test Engineer roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Employers file the LCA with DOL before petitioning USCIS, and the 85,000-slot annual cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Senior Test Engineer
Map your degree to the role
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to test engineering. A computer science or software engineering degree maps cleanly, but an unrelated major may trigger an RFE. Document any supplemental coursework or certifications before applications begin.
Target employers with cap-exempt status
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated labs are cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery exposure. Senior Test Engineer roles exist at all three. Filter by institution type early in your search.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Senior Test Engineer openings by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. This cuts time spent on roles where sponsorship is uncertain and surfaces companies already familiar with the test engineering specialty occupation classification.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Check the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer so you know the floor and can confirm the employer isn't filing at a wage that exposes the petition to a DOL audit.
Clarify remote work terms in your offer letter
If your Senior Test Engineer role is fully or partially remote, each distinct worksite may require a separate LCA posting. Confirm with your employer before filing whether the petition covers your home address, because amending the LCA later adds cost and delays authorization.
Use premium processing for offer deadline conflicts
If your employer has an onboarding deadline that standard USCIS processing can't meet, request premium processing at filing. USCIS guarantees a decision within 15 business days under premium, which is often critical when a start date is tied to a project launch or contract.
H-1B Visa Senior Test Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Test Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Senior Test Engineer positions typically require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, which meets USCIS's specialty occupation definition. Roles focused on automated testing frameworks, embedded systems, or quality assurance architecture tend to have the strongest qualification arguments. If the job description allows any bachelor's degree regardless of field, that weakens the specialty occupation case.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Test Engineers?
Technology companies, defense contractors, automotive OEMs, and semiconductor manufacturers are the most active H-1B sponsors for test engineering roles. Employers with mature hardware or software QA pipelines file LCAs for this title regularly. Migrate Mate lets you browse Senior Test Engineer openings filtered by verified H-1B filing history, so you're targeting companies already familiar with the sponsorship process.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my timeline as a Senior Test Engineer?
The standard H-1B lottery opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you're selected, your employer files a full petition after the registration window closes. Cap-exempt employers, including universities and nonprofit research labs, can file outside this window entirely. If your current OPT or CPT expires before October 1 and you're lottery-selected, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization through September 30.
Can I change employers while on H-1B as a Senior Test Engineer?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval. Your original petition must have been pending or approved for at least 180 days, and the new role must be in the same or a similar occupational classification. Test engineering roles typically satisfy the same SOC code requirement.
What SOC code applies to Senior Test Engineer roles for LCA purposes?
Most Senior Test Engineer positions are filed under SOC 17-2199 (Engineers, All Other) or 15-1253 (Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers), depending on whether the role is hardware-focused or software-focused. The SOC code determines which prevailing wage tier applies, so confirm with your employer which code they intend to use before the LCA is submitted to DOL. You can cross-reference the role against O*NET to see which classification best fits your responsibilities.
