- Architect solutions for motor control, board-level power distribution, and specialized charging electronics for our industry-leading product suite
- Deliver designs that push the boundaries of feature richness while maintaining a fanatical focus on cost-efficiency and long-term reliability
- Drive board-level architectures by distilling complex block diagrams into sub-components and circuit designs
- Develop from discrete circuit levels up to full-scale systems, seeing your designs move from the lab into volume manufacturing and global field deployment
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO CHARGEPOINT
- Strong electrical design intuition with a deep understanding of board-level engineering trade-offs
- Proven experience implementing embedded processors, high-speed interfaces, and precision analog sensing/control circuits
- Mastery of CAD, Schematic Capture, Simulation, and PCB Layout tools
- A disciplined approach to testing and validating electrical designs, ensuring every result and margin is documented with precision
- The ability to navigate software, mechanical, power, and thermal boundaries to ensure holistic system performance
- A curious, inventive spirit paired with a commitment to quality and the drive to build market-defining products
REQUIREMENTS
- 5+ years of hands-on experience developing electronic products with a successful record of bringing complex designs into high-volume production
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Design Engineer
Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree and the Design Engineer position. A mechanical engineering degree supports most product design roles, but a general business or unrelated STEM degree can trigger an RFE. Confirm alignment before applying.
Look up prevailing wage for your location
Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the wage level your employer must certify on the LCA. Design Engineer wages vary sharply by metro area and experience level. Knowing Level II versus Level III thresholds helps you evaluate whether an offer is LCA-compliant.
Target employers with cap-exempt H-1B filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Design Engineer roles by employers whose DOL Labor Condition Application filing history shows active H-1B sponsorship. This surfaces companies already familiar with the process, reducing the risk of an employer backing out after the lottery.
Ask whether the role uses CAD software tied to an SOC code
Design Engineer maps to multiple Standard Occupational Classification codes in O*NET depending on specialization. Confirm with your recruiter which SOC code the employer plans to use on the LCA, since mismatches between the job duties and the code can complicate DOL certification.
Negotiate your start date around the H-1B cap timeline
H-1B cap registrations open in March for an October 1 start. If you're on OPT, your employer needs to file before your EAD expires or use cap-gap coverage. Build your offer negotiation around these fixed USCIS deadlines, not just an internal onboarding calendar.
Collect portfolio evidence of specialty occupation work
USCIS scrutinizes Design Engineer petitions where the role could be interpreted as requiring only an associate degree or technical training. Prepare project documentation, engineering reports, and client deliverables that demonstrate you performed work requiring a full four-year engineering degree.

Find Design Engineer JobsDesign Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Design Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS classifies Design Engineer positions as specialty occupations when the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline such as mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering. Generic job descriptions that accept any technical background can invite scrutiny, so the employer's job posting and LCA should specify the required degree field clearly.
Which engineering degree fields support an H-1B petition for a Design Engineer position?
Mechanical, electrical, industrial, aerospace, biomedical, and materials engineering degrees are the most commonly accepted fields. Computer engineering or computer science can qualify for software-intensive design roles. USCIS evaluates whether the specific degree field is normally required for the position, so a design role in automotive or consumer electronics must tie back to a directly related discipline.
How do I find Design Engineer employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate filters Design Engineer listings by employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history from DOL disclosure data. This tells you which companies have actually sponsored H-1B workers in comparable roles, not just which ones claim to be open to sponsorship. Aerospace, semiconductor, medical device, and automotive manufacturers appear consistently in the filing data.
Can a Design Engineer on OPT get cap-gap coverage while waiting for the H-1B lottery?
Yes. If your OPT EAD expires between April 1 and September 30 and your employer files a timely H-1B cap petition before the EAD expiration date, USCIS cap-gap rules automatically extend your work authorization through September 30. You can continue working in your Design Engineer role during that period without interruption as long as the petition remains pending or approved.
What documentation should a Design Engineer prepare to support an H-1B RFE response?
Prepare a detailed position description that maps daily tasks to degree-level engineering knowledge, academic transcripts showing your specific engineering major, any professional engineering licenses or certifications, and work samples such as CAD drawings, design specifications, or engineering reports. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization should also be included to establish equivalency.
