H-1B Visa Electronic Engineer Jobs
Electronic Engineer roles qualify as H-1B visa specialty occupations under USCIS rules, requiring at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Employers must file a certified LCA with DOL before petitioning, and the 85,000-slot annual cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Electronic Engineer
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation standards
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to directly relate to electronic engineering work. A degree in a tangentially related field can trigger an RFE, so confirm the alignment before applying to roles where the job description cites a specific engineering discipline.
Search LCA filings to find proven sponsors
Use the OFLC Wage Search to pull certified LCA filings by SOC code 17-2072 (Electronics Engineers). Employers with recent filings have already committed to the prevailing wage process, which signals genuine H-1B sponsorship capacity for your role type.
Target defense contractors aware of work authorization limits
Many defense electronics roles require security clearances that H-1B holders can't obtain without permanent residency. Focus your search on commercial electronics, semiconductor, and consumer hardware employers where clearance isn't a baseline requirement.
Use Migrate Mate to filter by verified H-1B filing history
Pull up Electronic Engineer roles on Migrate Mate and filter by employers with confirmed LCA filing history in your target SOC code. You'll skip companies that list sponsorship as possible but have no documented track record of actually filing.
Negotiate your start date around the October 1 cap gap
H-1B petitions filed under the annual cap take effect October 1 at the earliest. If you're transitioning from OPT, confirm your EAD end date and cap-gap eligibility with your employer's HR team so your authorization doesn't lapse between offer acceptance and petition approval.
Clarify whether your role qualifies for cap-exempt filing
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research entities are cap-exempt under USCIS rules. Electronic engineers employed at these institutions can be sponsored outside the lottery window, with petitions filed year-round without competing for the 85,000 slots.
H-1B Visa Electronic Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electronic Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Electronic engineering meets the H-1B specialty occupation standard because it normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a closely related field. USCIS evaluates both the role's duties and the theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, both of which standard electronic engineering positions satisfy.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most frequently for Electronic Engineers?
Semiconductor manufacturers, consumer electronics companies, aerospace and defense contractors (for non-clearance roles), telecommunications firms, and medical device companies file the most LCAs for electronics engineering positions. You can verify which employers have active filing history for SOC code 17-2072 by searching the OFLC Wage Search database or browsing verified sponsors on Migrate Mate.
Can an Electronic Engineer on OPT STEM extension transfer to H-1B status?
Yes. If you're on a 24-month STEM OPT extension and your employer files an H-1B petition before your OPT expires, cap-gap provisions extend your work authorization through September 30 of the fiscal year your petition was filed for. Your employer must be E-Verify enrolled to support the STEM OPT extension, which also signals H-1B sponsorship readiness.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect H-1B Electronic Engineer roles?
Your employer must certify through an LCA that your offered wages meet the DOL prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and work location before USCIS will process the petition. Prevailing wage is set at one of four wage levels based on experience and complexity. Roles in higher cost-of-living metros like San Jose or Seattle carry significantly higher wage floors than national averages, which you can look up using the OFLC Wage Search.
Does holding a three-year engineering degree outside the U.S. affect H-1B eligibility?
It can complicate the petition. USCIS typically requires a four-year U.S. bachelor's equivalent. A three-year foreign degree may qualify if combined with one year of additional education or three years of progressive work experience per year of missing education, under the three-for-one equivalency rule. Your employer's immigration attorney will usually commission a credential evaluation report from an accredited evaluator to document equivalency before filing.
