H-1B Visa Electrical Engineer Jobs
Electrical Engineer roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines, requiring at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Employers in power systems, semiconductors, defense, and utilities file LCAs with the DOL before sponsoring, and many hire year-round outside the April lottery window through cap-exempt institutions.

Align your credentials to SOC codes
USCIS maps Electrical Engineer petitions to specific Standard Occupational Classification codes. Pull your O*NET profile for SOC 17-2071 and confirm your resume mirrors the listed knowledge areas so your employer's I-129 petition holds up to an RFE.
Target cap-exempt employers first
Universities, affiliated research hospitals, and qualifying nonprofits can file H-1B petitions any time of year, bypassing the April lottery. Electrical engineers in R&D, grid modernization, or applied research roles are common fits at these institutions.
Search LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter by Electrical Engineer roles to see which employers have certified LCAs with the DOL. Employers with consistent filing history are far more likely to sponsor and already understand the process, reducing delays after you receive an offer.
Request prevailing wage evidence before signing
Ask your employer which wage level they'll certify on the LCA. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the Level I through Level IV prevailing wage for your metro area and job title before accepting an offer, since underpayment triggers DOL compliance issues.
Document specialty occupation for defense or dual-use roles
USCIS scrutinizes petitions where the job description is broad enough to be filled without a specific engineering degree. If your role involves export-controlled systems or ITAR-regulated work, your employer should include detailed technical duties in the support letter.
Plan around the 60-day grace period when changing jobs
If you're switching employers, your H-1B status remains valid for 60 days after termination. Your new employer must file a transfer petition with USCIS before that window closes, and you can start work once they have a receipt notice in hand.

Find Electrical Engineer JobsElectrical Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS consistently recognizes Electrical Engineer as a specialty occupation because the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a directly related field. Your employer will need to document the degree requirement in the job description and LCA. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field can face RFEs, so specificity in the job posting matters.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for Electrical Engineers most often?
Semiconductors, defense and aerospace, utilities and grid infrastructure, automotive electrification, and telecommunications sponsor Electrical Engineers at high volumes. Government contractors and national laboratories also file frequently, with the added benefit that many qualify as cap-exempt employers. You can browse verified LCA filing history by industry and role on Migrate Mate to identify active sponsors in your target sector.
Can my employer file an H-1B petition mid-year if I missed the April lottery?
Yes, if your employer qualifies as cap-exempt. Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research entities can file H-1B petitions at any time without entering the lottery. For cap-subject employers, you'd need to wait for the next registration window in March. Electrical engineers in applied research or academic roles are well-positioned to find cap-exempt opportunities.
What wage level should I expect on the LCA for an Electrical Engineer role?
DOL wage levels for Electrical Engineers range from Level I for entry-level roles to Level IV for senior or principal engineers with specialized expertise. Your employer selects the level based on your duties, supervision, and complexity of work, then certifies it through the OFLC Wage Search tool. You can verify the prevailing wage for your specific metro area and experience level directly through OFLC before negotiations begin.
Does ITAR or security clearance work affect my H-1B sponsorship?
ITAR-controlled and classified work can complicate H-1B sponsorship because some employers restrict those roles to U.S. persons, meaning citizens and permanent residents. Non-ITAR electrical engineering roles at the same company are typically sponsorable. If a job posting mentions export control compliance or clearance requirements, clarify with the employer whether H-1B holders are eligible before investing time in the application process.
