Verify your degree meets specialty occupation standards
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and land surveying duties. A degree in civil engineering or geomatics typically satisfies this, but a general science degree may trigger an RFE. Gather transcripts and a credential evaluation before applying.
Check state licensure requirements before accepting offers
Most states require a Professional Land Surveyor license for independent practice. Confirm whether the role requires licensure on day one or allows supervised work under a licensed surveyor, since this affects how the employer drafts your job duties in the LCA.
Search DOL LCA data to target active sponsors
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified H-1B LCA filing history for land surveying roles. This surfaces firms that have successfully navigated the specialty occupation determination for this job title, not just companies with general H-1B programs.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier matches your experience
Run your target location and SOC code through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiations begin. Land surveyors in urban infrastructure projects often fall under a higher wage tier than rural boundary survey roles, and the LCA must reflect the correct level.
Ask employers about cap-exempt filing options
Surveying firms contracted with universities, government agencies, or nonprofit research institutions may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B petitioners. This lets you start without waiting for the April lottery, which matters if your OPT or current status has a tight expiration.
Request premium processing when project timelines are fixed
Infrastructure and construction projects run on fixed schedules. Ask your employer to file Form I-907 for premium processing so USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days, avoiding the risk that a project start date passes before your petition is approved.
H-1B Visa Land Surveyor: Frequently Asked Questions
Does land surveying qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, land surveying qualifies as a specialty occupation when the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or a directly related field. USCIS looks at whether a theoretical and practical application of specialized knowledge is required. Roles limited to fieldwork assistance without degree requirements may not qualify, so the job duties in your LCA need to reflect the professional-level scope of work.
Does my employer need to obtain a state surveying license on my behalf?
No, the H-1B petition covers your authorization to work, not your professional license. Obtaining a Professional Land Surveyor license is your responsibility, and eligibility requirements vary by state, including supervised experience hours and passing the NCEES exams. Some employers structure your role as working under a licensed surveyor until you meet your state's licensure requirements, which is worth clarifying before you sign an offer.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for land surveying roles?
Migrate Mate lets you search employers by verified H-1B LCA filing history filtered to land surveying and geomatics job titles. This is more reliable than asking employers directly during early recruitment, since DOL disclosure data shows which firms have actually filed LCAs for this occupation rather than which ones say they're open to sponsorship.
Can I change employers mid-project on an H-1B as a land surveyor?
Yes, H-1B portability under AC21 allows you to change employers after your petition has been pending or approved for at least 180 days, as long as your new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before you begin work. Surveying roles generally map to the same SOC code, which simplifies the similarity determination for USCIS.
What wage level should a land surveyor expect on an LCA?
The DOL assigns prevailing wage levels based on your SOC code, geographic work location, and experience level. Entry-level positions with supervision typically fall at Level I or II, while roles requiring independent project management or specialized expertise in areas like GPS geodetic control or boundary dispute resolution often fall at Level III or IV. Use the OFLC Wage Search with your specific work county to see current wage requirements before evaluating any offer.
