Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Machine Builder
Verify your degree aligns with the role
USCIS requires a direct connection between your field of study and the Machine Builder position. A mechanical or manufacturing engineering degree is the strongest fit. An industrial technology or mechatronics degree can qualify, but be ready to document the connection in your petition.
Check the LCA filing history before applying
Run the employer's name through the OFLC Wage Search to confirm they've filed Labor Condition Applications for Machine Builder or similar production engineering roles. Employers who've never filed an LCA face a steeper internal approval process and longer timelines.
Target manufacturers enrolled in E-Verify
E-Verify enrollment signals an employer already has compliance infrastructure for work authorization. For Machine Builder roles, focus on mid-size manufacturers in automation, packaging equipment, or industrial systems, where H-1B sponsorship for technical staff is more routine.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsors
Search Machine Builder roles on Migrate Mate to filter employers by confirmed H-1B filing history. Targeting companies that have already sponsored this occupation code cuts the time spent on employers unlikely to navigate the process.
Clarify specialty occupation status early
Machine Builder sits on the boundary of USCIS's specialty occupation definition. Push the employer to document that the role requires a specific engineering degree, not just mechanical aptitude. A well-drafted job description citing the O*NET profile strengthens the I-129 petition significantly.
Negotiate filing timing around the cap deadline
H-1B cap petitions must be filed for an October 1 start date. If you're receiving an offer in late winter or spring, confirm your employer plans to file in March during the registration window. A delayed offer can push your start date back a full year.
H-1B Visa Machine Builder: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Machine Builder role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is structured. USCIS requires that the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Machine Builder roles focused on mechanical design, automation integration, or precision assembly using an engineering background typically qualify. Roles framed as skilled trades without a degree requirement generally don't. Your employer's job description carries significant weight in this determination.
Which employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Machine Builder roles?
Manufacturers in industrial automation, food processing equipment, semiconductor tooling, and custom machinery are the most active sponsors for this occupation. Larger OEMs with dedicated engineering teams are more likely to have existing H-1B compliance processes. You can browse employers with confirmed filing history for this role on Migrate Mate, which filters by occupation and sponsorship activity.
What documents should I prepare to support an H-1B petition for this role?
You'll need official transcripts showing a degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechatronics, or a closely related field. If your degree title doesn't map directly to the role, a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized agency helps establish equivalency. Any professional licenses, certifications in CNC programming, PLC systems, or robotics integration, and a portfolio of technical projects strengthen the specialty occupation argument in the I-129 filing.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Machine Builder H-1B offers?
Before filing an LCA, your employer must certify with DOL that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for the role in your work location. You can check the applicable wage level yourself using the OFLC Wage Search by entering the Machine Builder occupation code and your metro area. If the offered wage falls below the prevailing wage, the LCA won't be certified and the petition can't proceed.
Can I switch Machine Builder employers while on an active H-1B?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval, provided your original petition has been approved and you haven't violated status. The new employer must file a new I-129 petition with USCIS. Your occupation and wage level must still meet specialty occupation and prevailing wage requirements at the new company.
