Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a CAD Engineer
Verify your degree matches the role
USCIS requires your degree field to align directly with CAD engineering duties. A mechanical or industrial engineering degree maps cleanly, but a general technology degree may trigger an RFE. Check the O*NET occupation profile to confirm acceptable degree fields before applying.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter CAD Engineer roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation code. That history signals an established H-1B sponsorship process, reducing the risk of an employer declining mid-offer.
Confirm software proficiency in your credentials
Employers filing an LCA for CAD roles specify the job duties that justify the specialty occupation classification. Document your proficiency in platform-specific tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CATIA in your portfolio, since USCIS may scrutinize whether the role genuinely requires a degree.
Ask employers about cap-exempt filing options
CAD engineers hired by universities, nonprofit research institutions, or government-affiliated labs may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B petitions, bypassing the annual lottery entirely. Ask during the offer stage whether the employer holds cap-exempt status before counting on an April filing.
Request the prevailing wage tier in writing
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your job's SOC code and work location. Look up the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating, so you know whether the offered salary satisfies Level I, II, or III requirements.
Use your 60-day grace period strategically
If your CAD Engineer role ends before your H-1B expires, USCIS allows a 60-day grace period to secure a new employer's transfer petition. Have your portfolio and credentials ready so a new sponsor can file quickly without premium processing delays eating into that window.
H-1B Visa CAD Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a CAD Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as mechanical engineering, industrial design, or engineering technology. Roles where any general degree satisfies the requirement can face RFEs. USCIS looks at whether the specific duties, not just the job title, genuinely require specialized degree-level knowledge to perform.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for CAD engineers?
Manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, architecture, and product development firms file the largest share of LCAs for CAD Engineer roles based on DOL disclosure data. Defense contractors and medical device companies also sponsor regularly due to the precision engineering requirements of their products. Browse verified H-1B sponsors for this role on Migrate Mate to find active filings filtered by industry.
Can my employer transfer my H-1B if I move to a new CAD Engineer role at a different company?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as your current H-1B is valid and you haven't fallen out of status. The new employer files a new I-129 and LCA covering your updated job duties and work location.
What happens if my CAD Engineer duties change significantly after my H-1B is approved?
A material change in job duties, location, or employer entity may require an amended H-1B petition. Moving to a new worksite in a different metropolitan statistical area always triggers a new LCA. USCIS expects the approved petition to reflect what you're actually doing, so coordinate with your employer's immigration counsel before accepting a role change or worksite transfer.
How do I find CAD Engineer jobs where the employer already has H-1B sponsorship experience?
Targeting employers with a documented history of H-1B filings shortens the sponsorship timeline significantly because they have established legal counsel and internal processes. Migrate Mate surfaces CAD Engineer job listings from employers with verified LCA filing history for this occupation, so you can focus your applications on companies that won't be navigating sponsorship for the first time.
