Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to directly relate to construction project engineering. A civil, structural, or construction management degree satisfies this. An unrelated degree paired with years of field experience may trigger an RFE, so confirm the match before applying.
Target ENR-ranked firms with LCA history
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings for construction engineering roles. Firms with consistent LCA history for your occupation code are already set up to sponsor, which cuts your onboarding time significantly.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating offers
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your role and work location. Look up the wage level for your occupation and county using the OFLC Wage Search before any salary discussion so you can negotiate within a compliant range.
Ask about project-site H-1B compliance early
Construction Project Engineers often rotate across job sites. Each new work location may require an amended LCA if it falls outside the approved metropolitan statistical area. Raise this with your prospective employer during the offer stage, not after your I-129 is filed.

Find Construction Project Engineer JobsConstruction Project Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Project Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS treats Construction Project Engineer as a specialty occupation because the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or construction engineering. Your employer's offer letter and the job description must specify that a degree in a directly related field is a minimum requirement, not merely preferred.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Construction Project Engineers?
Large general contractors, infrastructure developers, engineering and design-build firms, and public-sector construction agencies are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this role. Migrate Mate filters employers by verified DOL LCA filing history for construction engineering occupations, so you can identify which companies have sponsored roles matching your background.
How does working across multiple construction sites affect my H-1B status?
Each work location outside your approved metropolitan statistical area may require your employer to file an amended LCA and potentially an amended I-129 petition. Construction roles with frequent site rotation are one of the more common sources of H-1B compliance issues. Confirm your employer's process for handling multi-site assignments before you accept an offer.
Can a construction firm sponsor me for an H-1B if I'm currently on OPT?
Yes, but timing is critical. Your employer must submit your H-1B lottery registration in February. If selected, your H-1B takes effect October 1, and your OPT must remain valid through that transition. If you hold a STEM-eligible degree, a 24-month STEM OPT extension can bridge the gap if your employer is E-Verify enrolled.
What occupation code does USCIS use to classify Construction Project Engineers?
Construction Project Engineers typically fall under SOC code 17-2051 (Civil Engineers) or 11-9021 (Construction Managers), depending on how the role is defined in the job description. The O*NET profile for each code outlines the typical duties and degree requirements USCIS uses to evaluate specialty occupation status. Your employer's LCA must cite the correct SOC code for your actual duties.
