Verify your degree satisfies specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to product safety engineering. A degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering typically qualifies. A general business or unrelated science degree may trigger an RFE, so confirm alignment before applying.
Target regulated-industry employers first
Companies in medical devices, automotive, and consumer electronics face mandatory safety compliance obligations under federal agencies like the CPSC and FDA. These employers have established H-1B filing pipelines for safety engineers and are less likely to treat sponsorship as a barrier.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Pull up Product Safety Engineer roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active H-1B LCA filing history with DOL. This filters out companies that say they sponsor but rarely follow through, saving you weeks of outreach.
Check prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Your employer must pay the higher of the actual or prevailing wage for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage for your SOC code before the LCA is filed, so you can flag any underpayment risk early.
Understand how product safety maps to O*NET
USCIS adjudicators use O*NET occupation profiles to evaluate specialty occupation status. The O*NET profile for Quality Control Analysts and related safety titles lists a specific education requirement that directly supports your H-1B petition. Know this profile before your employer drafts the support letter.

Find Product Safety Engineer JobsProduct Safety Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Safety Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, product safety engineering qualifies as a specialty occupation when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, materials science, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the specific duties and degree requirements of your role, not just the job title. Employers with vague job descriptions that accept any degree may face an RFE on specialty occupation grounds.
Which industries hire the most H-1B-sponsored Product Safety Engineers?
Medical device manufacturers, consumer electronics companies, automotive suppliers, and industrial equipment producers file the highest volumes of H-1B LCAs for product safety roles. These industries operate under strict federal safety regulations, which creates ongoing demand for qualified safety engineers with specialized credentials. You can browse current openings with verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change product safety roles?
Yes, H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer once the transfer petition is filed, without waiting for approval, as long as your existing H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days. Your new employer must file a new I-129 and LCA before your first day in the new role.
How does prevailing wage apply to Product Safety Engineer H-1B petitions?
Your employer must pay the prevailing wage for the product safety engineering occupation in your work location, as determined by the DOL wage level assigned in the LCA. The wage level reflects your experience, complexity of duties, and supervision received. Underpaying relative to the certified LCA wage is a compliance violation that can jeopardize your H-1B status.
What credentials strengthen an H-1B petition for a product safety role?
A Certified Safety Professional designation, Functional Safety Engineer certification under IEC 61508, or a UL product safety certification can reinforce the specialty nature of your role when USCIS evaluates the petition. These credentials signal that the position requires specialized knowledge beyond a generic engineering degree, which supports the specialty occupation argument in your employer's support letter.
