Verify your degree field matches the role
H-1B approval for CAD Technician roles depends on your degree being in a directly related field like mechanical engineering technology or drafting. A general IT or business degree typically won't support the specialty occupation requirement USCIS applies.
Check the O*NET classification before applying
CAD Technician maps to multiple O*NET occupations depending on industry, including mechanical drafters and civil drafting technicians. Confirm your target job title aligns with a Job Zone 3 or higher classification, which strengthens the specialty occupation argument in your H-1B petition.
Target industries with consistent LCA filing history
Manufacturing, aerospace, civil engineering firms, and architectural consultancies file LCAs for CAD roles far more consistently than general staffing agencies. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by occupation code and industry so you're targeting companies with a real H-1B track record for this specific role.
Confirm prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage meeting the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Look up the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer negotiation so you know the floor your employer is legally required to meet.
Ask employers about their E-Verify enrollment upfront
USCIS requires H-1B employers to be enrolled in E-Verify. Smaller engineering firms or subcontractors sometimes aren't enrolled, which blocks them from sponsoring. Confirm E-Verify participation before investing time in their interview process to avoid a late-stage dead end.
Plan your filing timeline around the cap and your OPT end date
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed for an October 1 start date, and USCIS opens registration in March. If your OPT expires before October 1, cap-gap protection covers the gap only if your employer files before your current status expires.
H-1B Visa CAD Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a CAD Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS requires that the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. A CAD Technician job description that requires a degree in mechanical engineering technology, drafting, or a closely related discipline will typically satisfy the specialty occupation standard. Generic job postings listing 'any bachelor's degree' or no degree requirement at all are much harder to approve.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for CAD Technician roles?
Aerospace and defense contractors, civil and structural engineering firms, automotive manufacturers, and architectural design companies are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for CAD Technician positions. These industries routinely file LCAs for drafting and design roles. Use Migrate Mate to browse employers in these sectors who have verified H-1B filing history specifically for CAD and drafting occupations.
Can an associate degree support an H-1B petition for a CAD Technician job?
Not directly. USCIS requires the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree for H-1B approval. An associate degree alone won't satisfy that threshold. You can potentially combine a two-year degree with substantial relevant work experience, where three years of progressive experience substitutes for one year of education, but this requires careful documentation and is evaluated case by case.
What SOC code is typically used when employers file an LCA for a CAD Technician?
Employers most commonly file under SOC 17-3013 (Mechanical Drafters) or 17-3011 (Architectural and Civil Drafters), depending on the industry and software tools involved. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level your employer must certify on the LCA. Confirm with your employer which code they intend to use before the LCA is filed, since this affects your wage floor.
Does software specialization affect H-1B eligibility for CAD Technician roles?
Proficiency in specific platforms like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, or CATIA can strengthen a specialty occupation argument if the employer's job description ties those tools to degree-level knowledge requirements. Employers who frame the role around advanced parametric modeling or BIM workflows, rather than basic drafting tasks, tend to have more defensible H-1B petitions for CAD Technician positions.
