Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Electrical Controls Engineer
Verify your SOC code before applying
Electrical Controls Engineers are typically classified under SOC 17-2071 (Electrical Engineers) or 17-2199. Confirm which code your target employer uses by checking the OFLC Wage Search, since the SOC code directly determines your prevailing wage tier and LCA filing requirements.
Document PLC and SCADA experience precisely
Your H-1B petition must show a direct nexus between your degree and the job duties. List specific platforms you've programmed, such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Rockwell, alongside the engineering principles applied. Vague experience descriptions invite Requests for Evidence from USCIS.
Target employers with cap-exempt H-1B filing access
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with research institutions, and certain government contractors are exempt from the annual H-1B cap lottery. Electrical Controls Engineers in R&D or testing roles at these organizations can be sponsored year-round without waiting for the April registration window.
Search LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter employers by H-1B LCA filings for electrical engineering roles on Migrate Mate before sending applications. This shows you which companies have an established sponsorship track record for this job category, saving time on employers unlikely to file.
Request prevailing wage documentation from HR
Before accepting an offer, ask HR to confirm the wage level DOL assigned to the role on the LCA. Your offered salary must meet or exceed that figure or USCIS will deny the petition. Level I wages are entry-level and can be a red flag for experienced engineers.
File I-129 with premium processing if start dates are tight
Standard USCIS adjudication for I-129 petitions can run several months. If your current OPT or prior visa status expires within that window, premium processing upgrades adjudication to 15 business days and reduces the risk of an authorization gap before your start date.

Find Electrical Controls Engineer JobsElectrical Controls Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Controls Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS recognizes electrical engineering positions as specialty occupations when the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field. If a job posting lists the degree as preferred rather than required, the employer may need to provide additional evidence in the H-1B petition to establish the requirement.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for this role?
Manufacturing automation, energy and utilities, aerospace and defense, automotive systems, and industrial equipment companies are frequent H-1B sponsors for Electrical Controls Engineers. The O*NET occupation profile for this role maps to sectors with consistent demand for controls expertise. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate before targeting your applications.
Can I switch to a new employer on H-1B if my controls engineering role changes significantly?
H-1B portability under AC21 allows you to change employers after 240 days of adjudication, but if your new role involves substantially different duties, your new employer must file a new I-129 petition, not just an amendment. A shift from PLC programming to project management or sales engineering could require documenting the specialty occupation connection afresh with USCIS.
How does the prevailing wage determination work for Electrical Controls Engineers?
Your employer files an LCA with DOL certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your job location and SOC code. DOL assigns wage levels I through IV based on experience and complexity. Most experienced controls engineers qualify at Level II or III. You can verify current prevailing wages by SOC code and location using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer is acquired or merged?
If a successor employer assumes all rights, obligations, and employees of your original sponsoring company, USCIS generally allows continued H-1B employment without a new petition, provided your job duties and location remain materially the same. If the acquiring company has a different corporate structure or changes your role, they'll need to file a new or amended I-129. Get HR to confirm the succession status in writing before your first day with the new entity.
