Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Bridge Inspector
Verify your credentials meet specialty occupation
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and bridge inspection duties. A civil or structural engineering degree satisfies this. A general construction management degree may trigger an RFE, so gather academic transcripts and course descriptions before applying.
Target public infrastructure employers with H-1B history
State DOTs, municipal transportation agencies, and large engineering consultancies regularly sponsor H-1B visas for inspection roles. Search Migrate Mate to filter employers with verified LCA filing history specifically for civil and structural engineering job codes.
Align your offer letter with the LCA wage level
DOL's OFLC Wage Search shows prevailing wages for bridge inspectors by county and experience level. Confirm your offered salary meets at least the Level I or Level II wage before your employer certifies the LCA, or the petition faces a DOL compliance risk.
Anticipate NBIS certification questions during offers
Federal bridge inspection requires National Bridge Inspection Standards compliance. Employers often ask whether you hold a FHWA-approved team leader certification. Having this credential documented before offer negotiations shortens the time between offer and H-1B filing.
Track cap-gap coverage if you're transitioning from OPT
If you're on STEM OPT and your employer files your H-1B by April 1, cap-gap rules extend your work authorization through September 30. USCIS confirms cap-gap eligibility on your I-20 extension, so request the updated document from your DSO immediately after your receipt notice arrives.
Understand portability rights before accepting a transfer
If you're already on H-1B and a new bridge inspection firm wants to hire you, they can file an H-1B transfer and you can start working once USCIS issues a receipt notice. You don't need to wait for approval, but your job duties must remain substantially similar to your approved petition.

Find Bridge Inspector JobsBridge Inspector H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does bridge inspector qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Bridge inspection falls under civil engineering SOC codes that USCIS recognizes as specialty occupations, provided the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or a closely related engineering field. If the job description allows non-degreed applicants, your employer will need to document why the specific position requires a degree before USCIS will approve the petition.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for bridge inspector roles?
State transportation departments, federal contractors working on FHWA-funded projects, and large civil engineering consultancies are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for bridge inspection roles. You can search Migrate Mate to find employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings for civil and structural engineering positions, which signals active sponsorship capacity.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect bridge inspector offers?
Before USCIS accepts your H-1B petition, your employer must file an LCA certifying your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for bridge inspectors in your work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the applicable wage level by county before negotiations, so you know whether an offer will clear the certification threshold.
Does my engineering license affect H-1B eligibility as a bridge inspector?
A Professional Engineer license strengthens your petition by reinforcing the specialty occupation argument, but USCIS doesn't require licensure for H-1B approval. What matters most is your degree field and its direct relationship to your inspection duties. If your PE is from another country, document your credential evaluation alongside your degree transcripts when your employer assembles the petition.
Can I switch bridge inspection employers while on H-1B?
Yes. Your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition, and you can start working once USCIS issues a receipt notice without waiting for full approval, as long as you've maintained valid H-1B status with your current employer. The transfer petition must reflect bridge inspection duties substantially similar to your originally approved role, so a significant shift into general construction management could create complications.
