H-1B Visa Structural Designer Jobs
Structural Designer roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in civil, structural, or architectural engineering. Employers file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before petitioning USCIS, and the 85,000-slot annual cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Translate your credentials before interviewing
If your engineering degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member service before applying. Employers filing your H-1B petition need documentation that your degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's in a directly related engineering field.
Target firms with active LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Structural Designer roles by employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings. A documented LCA history signals the employer understands H-1B obligations and has an internal process ready to move quickly.
Prioritize employers with E-Verify enrollment
Engineering firms enrolled in E-Verify have already built compliance infrastructure around work authorization verification. This reduces onboarding friction and signals familiarity with the documentation requirements that come alongside an H-1B transfer or new petition.
Clarify BIM software alignment during technical screens
Many H-1B petitions for Structural Designers cite specific software proficiencies like Revit or STAAD.Pro as part of the specialty occupation justification. Confirm early which tools the employer lists in the LCA job description so your application materials match the filed petition exactly.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 17-3011 in your target metro before accepting an offer so you know the minimum wage the LCA legally requires for your role.
Negotiate premium processing into your offer terms
USCIS premium processing upgrades adjudication to 15 business days. For Structural Designer roles with project start dates tied to construction schedules, ask your employer to include premium processing in the offer letter before you resign from your current position.
H-1B Visa Structural Designer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Structural Designer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the job description, not just the title. Roles involving structural analysis, detailing, or BIM coordination for commercial or infrastructure projects consistently meet the specialty occupation standard when the employer's LCA job description ties the duties to a specific degree field.
How do I find employers that actively sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Designer positions?
Use Migrate Mate to search Structural Designer roles filtered by employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history. Engineering firms, architecture and engineering consultancies, and large construction management companies appear most frequently in DOL LCA disclosures for this occupation. Smaller firms may sponsor but are less likely to have an established H-1B process already in place.
What happens to my H-1B status if I switch from one engineering firm to another?
You're protected by H-1B portability under AC21 once your petition has been pending for 180 days or more. Your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before or when you start. You can begin working for the new firm as soon as the transfer petition is filed, without waiting for USCIS approval, as long as the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification.
Can my employer list multiple work locations on the H-1B petition for a Structural Designer role?
Yes, but each worksite requires a separate Labor Condition Application posted at that location. Structural Designers who rotate between project sites or work across multiple office locations need their employer to file LCAs covering each specific address. If you're assigned to a client site not listed in the original petition, your employer must file an amended petition with USCIS before the placement begins.
Does O*NET classify Structural Designer as a job zone that supports H-1B specialty occupation arguments?
O*NET classifies drafters and engineering technicians in Job Zone 3 to 4, depending on the specific role. For H-1B purposes, USCIS focuses on whether the position as described by the employer requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field, not the O*NET job zone alone. Employers strengthen specialty occupation arguments by tying structural design duties directly to engineering degree requirements in the LCA and support documentation.
