INTRODUCTION
Sensing technology empowers Apple products with revolutionary features, including Touch ID, Face ID, and Camera Control Button. The Sensing Hardware Test team is responsible for the research, design, and development of various metrology solutions, encompassing technology characterization in laboratories and mass production manufacturing. This team is seeking an exceptional engineer with a profound understanding of the physics underlying sensing hardware and engineering principles. This candidate will have the opportunity to explore the most advanced sensing technology and deploy innovative test infrastructure for the mass production of the next Apple product.
DESCRIPTION
In this role, you'll own the integrated architecture of precision test stations, spanning custom mechanical fixtures, motion control systems, sensor integration, electrical interfaces, and embedded automation. You'll collaborate closely with hardware, software, and operations teams to deliver robust, scalable, and intelligent test solutions that bridge electrical, mechanical, and software domains. This position offers a clear growth path toward test system architecture or cross-functional leadership, and your work will directly influence the quality and scalability of Apple's most innovative sensing technologies through seamless mechatronic integration.
Responsibilities
- Partner with cross-functional teams to define test methodologies for a wide range of sensing hardware (force, actuators/motors/BLDC, haptics, acoustics, vibration etc.)
- Author clear and thorough sensor technology test engineering requirement documents.
- Provide first principles understanding of characterization data results including analysis of results and how it impacts the sensor functioning and integration, FACA & Root Cause Analysis.
- Design and deliver test solutions that are fully integrated across electrical, mechanical, and software domains.
- Debug issues across hardware-software boundaries and support system bring-up at internal and external manufacturing sites.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to optimize test systems for Apple's high-volume production quality standards.
- Deliver executive-level summaries and technical presentations that communicate complex concepts clearly.
- Travel domestically and internationally (as needed) to Apple and supplier facilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Practical knowledge in electrical design & analysis, hands-on experience with common electronic instrumentations (e.g. SMU, DMM, Oscilloscope).
- Hands-on programming skills (e.g. C/C++, python) for embedded systems and mechatronics system integration.
- Proven ability to work multi-functionally with electrical, software, and operations teams to deliver integrated test systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics or equivalent.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics or related fields with a minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience preferred.
- Familiarity with sensor technologies (e.g., Touch, Force, Actuation, Optics) and their testing challenges.
- Genuine passion for diving deep into hardware-software integration issues and solving complex test problems.
- Experience designing robust, scalable test solutions for high-throughput production environments.
- Experience collaborating with external vendors to integrate test solutions.
- Experience developing complex algorithms for signal processing or control.
PAY & BENEFITS
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $129,300 and $225,300, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You'll also receive benefits including: Comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, a range of discounted products and free services, and for formal education related to advancing your career at Apple, reimbursement for certain educational expenses - including tuition. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary bonuses or commission payments as well as relocation.

Verify your role meets specialty occupation
H-1B requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Pull the O*NET profile for Mechatronics Technicians to confirm the education requirements USCIS evaluates, and document how your degree ties to the specific duties in your job offer.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers who've filed Labor Condition Applications for Mechatronics or closely related engineering technician roles, so you're approaching companies already familiar with the H-1B process for your occupation.
Check prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Your offer must meet the DOL-certified prevailing wage for your job location and skill level. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the correct Standard Occupational Classification code before signing anything, since underpaid offers will fail LCA certification.
Prioritize E-Verify enrolled manufacturers
STEM-heavy production facilities and defense contractors are often E-Verify participants, which signals compliance infrastructure. Employers already enrolled tend to have HR teams experienced in sponsoring technical roles like yours through the full I-129 process.
Secure your credentials before the petition
If your mechatronics degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation completed by a NACES-member evaluator before your employer files. USCIS frequently issues Requests for Evidence on foreign three-year technical degrees for this occupation.
Time your start date around the cap cycle
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed in April for an October 1 start. If you're finishing OPT or changing status, work backward from that date with your employer so the I-129 is filed the moment the filing window opens.
H-1B Visa Mechatronics Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Mechatronics Technician role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
It depends on how the role is defined. USCIS looks at whether the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Mechatronics Technician roles that involve systems integration, PLC programming, or robotics calibration typically qualify, but purely hands-on maintenance roles without a degree requirement may not. The job description and the employer's internal requirements are the deciding factors.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for Mechatronics Technicians most often?
Advanced manufacturing, automotive production, aerospace, robotics, and industrial automation are the sectors where H-1B LCA filings for mechatronics-related roles appear most frequently. Defense contractors and medical device manufacturers also sponsor this occupation. You can browse companies with verified H-1B filing history for technical roles on Migrate Mate.
What documents should I prepare before a Mechatronics Technician H-1B petition is filed?
Your employer needs your degree transcripts, a credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S., a detailed job description aligned to specialty occupation criteria, and proof of any relevant licenses or certifications. If your mechatronics degree is a three-year international program, get it evaluated by a NACES-member organization before the petition is submitted to USCIS.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Mechatronics Technician H-1B applications?
Your employer must certify through the LCA that your offered wage meets the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation code and work location. Mechatronics roles can fall under different Standard Occupational Classification codes depending on duties, and the wage floor varies by region. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the applicable wage level before your employer submits the LCA.
Can I stay in the U.S. while my Mechatronics Technician H-1B is pending?
If you're changing status from F-1 OPT to H-1B, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30 if your OPT expires while your petition is pending. If you're already on H-1B and transferring employers, you can begin working for the new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed, without waiting for approval, under H-1B portability rules.
