Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to power distribution work. An electrical engineering or power systems degree clears this cleanly. A general engineering degree may trigger a Request for Evidence, so get a credential evaluation before applying.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Filter employers by their DOL Labor Condition Application records for power engineering roles. Utilities and transmission operators that filed LCAs in the past two years are actively sponsoring. Use Migrate Mate to surface this data by job title and location.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating salary
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using SOC code 17-2071 before your offer stage so you enter negotiations knowing the wage floor, not after.
Confirm your employer is E-Verify enrolled
H-1B employers must be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask HR directly during the offer stage. Utilities and government contractors are often enrolled by requirement, but smaller engineering consultancies sometimes are not, which delays your petition filing.
Use O*NET to document specialty occupation evidence
Pull the O*NET profile for Power Distribution Engineers to identify the education and knowledge requirements USCIS reviewers look for. Your employer's attorney will use this to build the specialty occupation argument in your I-129 petition.
File premium processing if your start date is firm
USCIS premium processing upgrades your I-129 adjudication to 15 business days. For grid modernization project roles with fixed mobilization dates, this protects your start date if your employer files close to October 1.

Find Power Distribution Engineer JobsPower Distribution Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Power Distribution Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Power Distribution Engineer roles require at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related power systems field, which meets USCIS's specialty occupation definition. Your employer documents this qualification in the I-129 petition using job duties, educational requirements, and industry norms. Roles focused on grid design, substation engineering, or transmission planning have a strong track record of approval.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Power Distribution Engineers?
Investor-owned utilities, rural electric cooperatives, transmission system operators, and engineering consulting firms are the most active H-1B sponsors for this role. Federal contractors working on grid resilience and renewable integration projects also file regularly. To find employers with verified sponsorship history in power distribution, search Migrate Mate and filter by occupation.
What SOC code applies to Power Distribution Engineers for LCA filing purposes?
DOL typically maps Power Distribution Engineer roles to SOC code 17-2071, Electrical Engineers. Your employer uses this code when filing the Labor Condition Application with DOL. The SOC code determines which prevailing wage level applies to your position, so confirm the mapping with your employer's attorney before the LCA is submitted to avoid wage compliance issues.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new power engineering employer mid-year?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a valid H-1B transfer petition with USCIS, without waiting for approval. The new employer must file a fresh LCA for your role and location. Your prior H-1B approval and wage history in power distribution strengthen the transfer petition.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect Power Distribution Engineer candidates?
Most Power Distribution Engineer positions at private utilities and consulting firms are subject to the annual H-1B cap of 65,000 regular-cap slots and 20,000 master's cap slots. Registrations open in March each year for an October 1 start date. Some roles at government-owned utilities or nonprofit research entities may qualify as cap-exempt, which allows filing at any time of year.
