Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to transportation engineering work. A civil engineering degree typically satisfies this, but a general STEM degree may trigger an RFE if the connection to traffic or infrastructure design isn't explicit.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search the OFLC Wage Search to confirm a firm has filed Labor Condition Applications for transportation or civil engineering roles. Past LCA activity signals an employer already understands the H-1B process and isn't learning it on your timeline.
Check SOC code alignment before accepting an offer
Transportation Engineers typically file under SOC 17-2051. If your offer letter describes traffic modeling or ITS work that maps to a different SOC code, flag it before petition filing so your employer's attorney can document the specialty occupation correctly.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by sponsorship history
Search Transportation Engineer positions on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers verified through DOL Labor Condition Application data so you're only applying to firms with a documented track record of H-1B sponsorship for engineering roles.
Confirm prevailing wage tier before negotiating salary
Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions. Your employer's LCA must certify at least the prevailing wage for your tier, so knowing the DOL figure in advance keeps your negotiation grounded in what USCIS will accept.
File premium processing if your project start date is fixed
Infrastructure projects run on fixed procurement schedules. If your employer needs you on-site by a specific date, request USCIS premium processing at filing so adjudication completes within 15 business days rather than waiting several months on regular processing.

Find Transportation Engineer JobsTransportation Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Transportation Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Transportation Engineering requires at least a bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering, which satisfies the USCIS specialty occupation standard. Most positions involving traffic analysis, roadway design, or transit planning map to SOC code 17-2051. Roles where any unrelated degree is accepted may face greater scrutiny, so your job description should specify a directly related field of study.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Transportation Engineers?
Engineering consulting firms, state departments of transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, transit agencies, and large construction contractors are the most active sponsors. Federal employers generally hire through different pathways. To find companies with verified H-1B filing history for engineering roles, search Transportation Engineer positions on Migrate Mate, which filters employers by DOL Labor Condition Application data.
Can a Transportation Engineer change employers while on H-1B status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before your current status expires, and you can start working as soon as USCIS receives it. The new petition must also certify a prevailing wage through a fresh LCA filed with DOL, so confirm your prospective employer is ready to move quickly.
How does prevailing wage affect H-1B sponsorship for Transportation Engineers?
DOL assigns one of four wage levels based on your experience and responsibilities. Your employer's LCA must certify they'll pay at least that level for your work location. Transportation Engineering wages vary significantly by region, so the same title in a rural area and a major metro will have different DOL thresholds. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the level before finalizing your offer.
Does working on public infrastructure projects affect H-1B status?
It can, if you're placed at a third-party government site rather than your employer's own facility. USCIS scrutinizes end-client placement arrangements for engineers on public agency contracts. Your employer should document control over your work assignments and confirm the site qualifies under their LCA. Roles based primarily at the sponsoring firm's office face fewer complications than long-term deployments at a client agency.
