H-1B Visa Structural Engineer Jobs
Structural Engineer roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because the position typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Many employers in infrastructure, construction, and consulting actively file H-1B petitions for licensed PEs and EITs, making this one of the more sponsorship-accessible engineering disciplines.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Structural Engineer
Verify your credentials meet specialty occupation
USCIS evaluates whether your role requires a directly related engineering degree. A generic civil engineering degree supporting a structural role is usually sufficient, but document the degree-job connection clearly in your resume and any employer offer letters.
Target firms with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Structural Engineer roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation. LCA history confirms a company has navigated H-1B sponsorship before, not just that they're open to it in principle.
Check prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Run your title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before salary negotiations. Your offer must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your wage level, and underpayment is one of the most common reasons H-1B petitions attract scrutiny after filing.
Understand PE licensure timing during H-1B status
Many structural roles eventually require a Professional Engineer license, but you can work as an EIT under H-1B status while pursuing it. Confirm with your employer that the job description supports your current credential level so USCIS doesn't flag a specialty occupation mismatch.
Ask employers about cap-exempt project work
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government contractors can sometimes sponsor H-1B workers outside the annual cap. Structural engineers working on public infrastructure or academic facilities may qualify, which bypasses the lottery entirely and allows year-round filing.
File early to protect your 60-day grace period
If your current H-1B status ends before a new petition is approved, you have a 60-day grace period to secure a new employer filing. Premium processing through USCIS compresses approval time to 15 business days, which matters if you're near that window.

Find Structural Engineer JobsStructural Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Structural Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS consistently recognizes Structural Engineer as a specialty occupation because the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Your employer's offer letter and job description should explicitly state the degree requirement and link the specific engineering discipline to the duties performed, which strengthens the petition against an RFE.
Do I need a PE license to get H-1B sponsorship as a Structural Engineer?
Not necessarily. Many H-1B petitions for structural roles are approved at the EIT or graduate-engineer level, provided the job description reflects work that requires an engineering degree. However, if the role title or duties require licensure under state law, your employer may need to address that in the LCA. Check O*NET for the occupation's standard entry requirements to understand what USCIS will expect.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Engineers?
Engineering consulting firms, civil and structural design firms, large general contractors, and infrastructure-focused government contractors are the most active H-1B sponsors in this field. Public-sector employers and universities can sometimes file outside the cap entirely. Browse Structural Engineer roles on Migrate Mate to see employers with verified LCA filing history for this specific occupation code.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect Structural Engineer offers?
DOL requires your employer to pay at least the prevailing wage for your occupation, experience level, and work location. Structural engineering wages vary significantly by region, so an offer that meets the national median may fall short of prevailing wage in high-cost metro areas. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for your job title and city before evaluating any offer.
Can I switch employers mid-H-1B if I get a better offer as a Structural Engineer?
Yes, H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval. Your status remains valid during the transfer as long as you've been in lawful H-1B status and the new role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Structural engineering roles typically port cleanly because the occupation definition is consistent across employers.
