H-1B Visa Biomedical Engineer Jobs
Biomedical Engineer roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations under USCIS because they require at least a bachelor's degree in biomedical, mechanical, or electrical engineering. Medical device companies, hospital systems, and research institutions are among the most active H-1B sponsors for this occupation, with cap-subject petitions due each April for an October 1 start.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Biomedical Engineer
Align your degree to the role
USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree field directly relates to biomedical engineering. A degree in mechanical or electrical engineering with coursework in biomechanics or medical devices strengthens your petition. Document the connection explicitly in your supporting materials before applying.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Biomedical Engineers are classified under SOC code 17-2031. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications under that code, so you're targeting companies with a documented H-1B sponsorship track record for this exact role.
Target device manufacturers and hospital networks
Medical device manufacturers and large hospital systems file H-1B petitions for Biomedical Engineers at higher rates than general engineering firms. Focus your outreach on employers operating regulated device production or clinical engineering departments, where your credentials match a clear business need.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer must certify a wage meeting the DOL prevailing wage level for your role and location on the LCA. Run your job title and metro area through the OFLC Wage Search before entering salary discussions so you understand the floor USCIS will expect your offer to clear.
Confirm FDA-regulated work triggers specific job duties
Roles involving FDA-regulated device development or quality systems carry detailed job duty requirements in H-1B petitions. Make sure your offer letter and job description reference the specific engineering functions you'll perform, not just a generic title, to reduce the risk of a Request for Evidence from USCIS.
Time your petition filing around the April lottery window
Cap-subject H-1B petitions open for filing on April 1 each year for an October 1 start date. Your employer must complete the USCIS online registration in March before filing the full I-129 petition. Missing the registration window means waiting another full year.

Find Biomedical Engineer JobsBiomedical Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Biomedical Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies Biomedical Engineer as a specialty occupation because the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in biomedical, mechanical, electrical, or a closely related engineering field. Your employer must document that the specific role at their organization requires that degree, not just that the field generally does.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Biomedical Engineers?
Medical device manufacturers, hospital health systems, pharmaceutical companies, and university research centers are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for Biomedical Engineers. You can identify employers with an active filing history for this occupation code on Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data filtered by role.
Can I switch Biomedical Engineer employers while on H-1B?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. Once your petition has been pending or approved for at least 180 days, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, without waiting for USCIS to approve it. The new role must be in the same or a similar occupational classification.
Does my degree field matter if it's not called biomedical engineering?
It does matter. USCIS reviews the nexus between your degree field and the job duties. Degrees in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, or chemical engineering can support a Biomedical Engineer petition if your coursework or experience bridges to the role. Your employer's attorney will typically include a detailed explanation in the I-129 filing to establish that connection.
What happens if my Biomedical Engineer H-1B is selected in the lottery but my employer withdraws before October 1?
If your employer withdraws the approved petition before your start date, your H-1B approval becomes void. You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new sponsoring employer. Another employer can file a new cap-exempt H-1B petition on your behalf if your original petition was approved within the past six years.
