Match your degree to the SOC code
H-1B specialty occupation requires your degree field to align with the specific SOC code on the LCA. Robotics roles often file under mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science, so confirm your credential matches before applying.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by DOL LCA filing history for robotics-related SOC codes. This shows you which companies have actually sponsored H-1B workers in your occupation, not just those that post roles.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your location and SOC code. Run your role through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you know the Level I through Level IV range for your metro area.
Target E-Verify enrolled manufacturers and defense contractors
Federal contractors and subcontractors must use E-Verify, which signals consistent H-1B sponsorship infrastructure. Robotics divisions at aerospace and defense primes are accustomed to filing I-129 petitions and have established immigration counsel.
Document interdisciplinary work for specialty occupation
Robotics roles often blend mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. USCIS scrutinizes petitions where the degree field isn't an exact match. Build a credential portfolio showing coursework or certifications that map directly to the job duties in the LCA.
File premium processing if your start date is fixed
USCIS offers premium processing for I-129 petitions, returning a decision within 15 business days. If you're starting a robotics role tied to a product launch or contract milestone, ask your employer to elect premium processing at filing.
H-1B Visa Robotics: Frequently Asked Questions
Do robotics jobs qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes, robotics roles qualify when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related discipline. USCIS evaluates whether the specific job duties require that theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge. Roles that accept any degree regardless of field are harder to approve.
Which SOC codes do employers use for robotics H-1B filings?
Employers most commonly file robotics LCAs under SOC codes for mechanical engineers, electrical and electronics engineers, software developers, and industrial engineers, depending on the job's primary function. You can verify which code your employer plans to use by reviewing the certified LCA before your I-129 is filed. O*NET profiles for each occupation describe the degree requirements USCIS uses to assess specialty occupation.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B visas for robotics roles?
Migrate Mate surfaces employer LCA filing history by occupation code, so you can identify companies that have filed for robotics-related roles in the past. DOL disclosure data is public, but parsing it manually is time-consuming. Filtering by SOC code and location on Migrate Mate shows you which employers have a demonstrated pattern of H-1B sponsorship in your specific area of robotics.
Can my employer sponsor me on H-1B if my degree is in a different engineering field?
A degree in a closely related engineering discipline can support an H-1B petition if the employer can demonstrate the job duties require that specific body of knowledge. USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence asking the employer to explain the nexus between your degree and the role. Employers with strong immigration counsel often address this proactively in the initial petition with a detailed specialty occupation letter.
Does working on defense or government robotics contracts affect my H-1B sponsorship?
Federal contracts don't disqualify you from H-1B sponsorship, but some positions require security clearances that can complicate or delay the process. Employers on federal contracts must also be enrolled in E-Verify. If a role requires a clearance, confirm the employer has a process for sponsoring noncitizens, as some clearance categories are restricted to U.S. persons only.
