Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to electrical project engineering work. A general engineering degree usually qualifies, but a business or unrelated STEM degree may trigger an RFE. Confirm alignment before applying.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Electrical Project Engineer roles by employers who have filed LCAs for this occupation code, so you're applying to companies with a documented H-1B sponsorship track record, not guessing.
Check prevailing wage levels before negotiating
Run your target metro area and SOC code through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer call. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage, so knowing Level I through Level IV rates prevents low-ball offers that still pass compliance.
Document PE licensure or project lead experience early
Project engineer roles at utilities and EPC firms often require demonstrating independent judgment, which strengthens the specialty occupation argument. Gather performance reviews, stamped drawings, or scope-of-work documents before your employer starts the I-129 petition.
Ask employers about premium processing before signing
USCIS premium processing upgrades I-129 adjudication to 15 business days. Electrical project roles with defined project start dates can't absorb months of standard processing delays. Confirm whether your prospective employer will elect premium processing before you accept an offer.

Find Electrical Project Engineer JobsElectrical Project Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Project Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS treats electrical project engineering as a specialty occupation because it normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a closely related field. Roles that involve power systems design, project scoping, or construction oversight at the engineer-of-record level consistently meet the specialty occupation standard. A general engineering degree usually satisfies the requirement, but your degree field should connect directly to the duties in your offer letter.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Electrical Project Engineers?
Utilities, engineering-procurement-construction firms, semiconductor manufacturers, data center developers, and industrial automation integrators are the most consistent sponsors for this title. These employers file LCAs regularly because project pipelines require a steady flow of credentialed engineers. Use Migrate Mate to browse Electrical Project Engineer roles filtered by employers with active LCA filing history so you're applying to verified sponsors rather than guessing at company policy.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect my H-1B offer as an Electrical Project Engineer?
Before your employer can file the LCA, DOL requires the offered wage to meet or exceed the prevailing wage for your occupation code and work location. Electrical Project Engineer wages are benchmarked by metro area, so a role in Houston carries a different threshold than one in San Jose. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your specific metro before negotiating to understand where your offer falls among the four wage levels.
Can I switch employers mid-project while on H-1B as an Electrical Project Engineer?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. If your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition while your current petition is still valid, you can start the new role once the transfer is received by USCIS, without waiting for approval. The practical complication for project engineers is that multi-year project commitments and client confidentiality clauses may limit your timeline. Confirm with your new employer that they'll file promptly so your authorization doesn't lapse between roles.
Does a Professional Engineer license strengthen an H-1B petition for this role?
A PE license reinforces the specialty occupation argument by demonstrating that your role requires state-recognized professional judgment, not just degree-level knowledge. It doesn't replace the degree requirement, but it signals to USCIS that the position carries independent engineering responsibility. Some employers use PE licensure as supporting evidence in the I-129 petition, particularly for roles involving stamped drawings, inspection authority, or utility interconnection approvals.
