Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Field Services Engineer
Verify your role meets specialty occupation standards
Field Services Engineer roles vary widely. Confirm your position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a directly related field. USCIS scrutinizes roles with broad task descriptions, so get a detailed offer letter tying specific technical duties to your degree.
Check LCA wage levels for each worksite location
Your employer files a separate Labor Condition Application for every geographic area where you work. Use the OFLC Wage Search to compare prevailing wages by worksite zip code before accepting an offer with multi-site travel requirements.
Target employers with E-Verify enrollment and field service teams
H-1B employers must be E-Verify participants. Filter your search on Migrate Mate for companies with active H-1B LCA filing history in field services or systems integration roles, which signals both sponsorship experience and relevant project pipelines.
Clarify how your employer handles short-term worksite assignments
USCIS allows short-term placements at third-party sites without an amended petition if you maintain a primary worksite. Ask prospective employers whether their field deployment model triggers amended H-1B filings, which affects your petition timeline and costs.
Use O*NET to align your resume with specialty occupation language
The O*NET profile for Field Services Engineers outlines the technical knowledge domains USCIS officers reference. Matching your resume's skills and duties to those classifications strengthens the specialty occupation argument in your employer's I-129 petition.
Time your job search around the annual H-1B cap window
Cap-subject H-1B petitions can only start employment on October 1. If you're transitioning from OPT, confirm your EAD expiration date and ask employers whether they'll file for premium processing to receive a decision before your authorization lapses.
H-1B Visa Field Services Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Field Services Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. A Field Services Engineer position qualifies as a specialty occupation when the employer's job description requires a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, computer science, electronics, or a directly related technical field. Roles framed as general technician or field support work, where any bachelor's degree suffices, are more likely to receive a Request for Evidence from USCIS. The offer letter and Labor Condition Application should tie specific engineering duties to your degree discipline.
How does multi-site field work affect my H-1B petition?
Field Services Engineers often work across multiple client locations, which creates LCA compliance obligations for employers. Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application for each geographic area where you'll work for more than a few days. For short-term assignments at third-party sites, USCIS permits a single LCA with a primary worksite listed, but extended placements at a new location may require an amended I-129 petition. Clarify the deployment schedule with your employer before your petition is filed.
What prevailing wage level should I expect for a Field Services Engineer H-1B role?
Prevailing wages for Field Services Engineers vary by worksite location, not just employer headquarters. Your employer uses the OFLC Wage Search to determine the DOL wage level, typically Level I for entry-level and Level II or III for roles requiring independent judgment or specialized system knowledge. Wages are set by the Standard Occupational Classification code the employer assigns your role, so confirming the correct SOC code before the LCA is filed protects against underpayment findings.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for Field Services Engineer positions?
Search Migrate Mate to browse Field Services Engineer roles filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. Companies in industrial automation, telecommunications infrastructure, medical device installation, and enterprise IT services tend to sponsor regularly because the roles demand specialized technical credentials and are harder to fill domestically. Prioritizing employers with existing field service teams indicates both hiring continuity and familiarity with the H-1B process.
Can I switch employers mid-H-1B and continue doing field services work?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer once they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as your original petition was approved and you've been in valid H-1B status for at least 180 days. The new employer must file a new I-129 and LCA before you begin work. If your new role involves different worksites or a meaningfully different job description, the employer may also need to file an amended petition.
