Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Civil Project Engineer
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a directly related field for H-1B approval. A degree in general engineering or construction management can qualify, but your employer's attorney will need to document the connection explicitly in the petition.
Check prevailing wage before accepting offers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage for SOC code 17-2051 in the employer's county. Your offered salary must meet or exceed the certified LCA wage, and shortfalls are a common RFE trigger.
Target infrastructure-heavy employers with LCA history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Civil Project Engineer roles by employers with verified LCA filing history, so you're applying to companies that have already sponsored this occupation rather than ones that may hesitate once you disclose your visa status.
Factor PE licensure into your sponsorship timeline
Some civil project engineer roles require a Professional Engineer license, which varies by state and can take 12 to 18 months to obtain. Confirm whether your target role requires PE licensure before or after hire, since this affects when your employer can file the H-1B petition.
Ask employers about cap-exempt project work
Civil engineers working on projects for universities, nonprofit research institutions, or certain government contractors may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B sponsorship. If your employer holds qualifying contracts, your petition bypasses the annual lottery entirely.
Prepare a role-specific specialty occupation memo
USCIS scrutinizes civil engineering H-1B petitions for vague job descriptions. Request that your employer's attorney document specific project deliverables, required coursework, and how each duty ties to your degree field to pre-empt an RFE.
H-1B Visa Civil Project Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Civil Project Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Civil Project Engineer positions qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they require at least a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline. USCIS looks at both the theoretical and practical application of engineering knowledge. Roles involving project planning, structural analysis, or site design consistently meet this standard when the job description clearly ties duties to engineering coursework.
How do I find Civil Project Engineer employers that sponsor H-1B visas?
Search Migrate Mate to filter Civil Project Engineer openings by employers with documented LCA filing history. Infrastructure firms, municipal engineering consultancies, transportation agencies, and large construction contractors are the most active H-1B sponsors for this role. Targeting employers who have already filed for this SOC code reduces the risk of rejection after you disclose your visa requirement.
Can a state PE license requirement affect my H-1B petition?
It can. If the role requires a Professional Engineer license and you don't yet hold one, USCIS may question whether the position is immediately available at a specialty occupation level. Employers typically address this by framing the PE as a progression requirement rather than a day-one condition, but your petition documentation needs to reflect that carefully to avoid an RFE.
What wage level should I expect on the LCA for this role?
Most entry-level and early-career Civil Project Engineer positions are certified at DOL wage Level I or Level II, while senior roles with supervisory responsibilities typically fall at Level III. Use the OFLC Wage Search with SOC code 17-2051 and your target city to confirm the exact prevailing wage before your employer files. Your offer must match or exceed the certified wage.
Is Civil Project Engineer subject to the H-1B cap and lottery?
Most private-sector Civil Project Engineer roles are subject to the annual H-1B cap of 65,000 regular-cap slots plus 20,000 for U.S. master's degree holders. Registration takes place each March for an October 1 start. However, positions with universities, nonprofit research organizations, or qualifying government research entities are cap-exempt, meaning those employers can file at any time without lottery selection.
