Verify your degree meets specialty occupation standards
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to directly relate to construction estimating. A degree in construction management, civil engineering, or quantity surveying satisfies this. Architecture or general business degrees may trigger a Request for Evidence.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Construction Estimator roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this specific occupation code, so you're only pursuing companies with documented H-1B sponsorship experience in your field.
Check prevailing wage tiers before accepting an offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for SOC code 13-1051 in your target metro. Your offered salary must meet at least Level I, so confirm this before the LCA is filed, not after.
Prioritize employers enrolled in E-Verify
General contractors and construction firms working on federal projects are often required to use E-Verify, which signals established compliance infrastructure. These employers typically have smoother H-1B onboarding processes than smaller subcontractors filing for the first time.
Document your project cost experience in dollar volumes
H-1B petitions for estimators benefit from concrete evidence of specialty work. Quantify the value of projects you've estimated, the software platforms you've used, and whether your role required cost modeling for complex multi-trade or design-build contracts.
Negotiate your start date around cap-subject filing windows
Cap-subject H-1B petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start. If you receive an offer in June, you'll either need cap-exempt employer status or a one-year wait. Structure your offer letter to reflect an October 1 employment start date.

Find Construction Estimator JobsConstruction Estimator H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Estimator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, Construction Estimator qualifies as a specialty occupation when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the job description, not just the title, so your employer's offer letter and LCA must clearly articulate the degree requirement and the complexity of the estimating work involved.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Construction Estimators?
General contractors, construction management firms, specialty subcontractors, and engineering consultancies with active federal or large commercial project pipelines are the most consistent sponsors. Migrate Mate lets you filter Construction Estimator listings by employers with verified LCA filing history, so you can focus your search on companies that have sponsored this role before rather than guessing.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect Construction Estimator H-1B petitions?
Your employer must file an LCA certifying your salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for SOC code 13-1051 in your specific work location. Prevailing wages vary significantly by metro area. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the applicable wage level before you negotiate an offer, since the LCA locks in the wage commitment before USCIS sees the petition.
Can a Construction Estimator change employers while on H-1B status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA and I-129 petition before your first day.
Does construction estimating experience substitute for a degree in H-1B petitions?
USCIS allows three years of specialized experience to substitute for one year of formal education, so 12 years of directly relevant estimating experience can stand in for a four-year degree. Your employer's attorney will need strong evidence, including employer letters, project documentation, and a credentials evaluation, to support an experience-based petition for this occupation.
