Verify your SOC code before applying
Boiler Operator roles often get filed under SOC 51-8021. Check the O*NET profile for this code to confirm the listed knowledge requirements match your background before targeting employers whose LCAs use that classification.
Pull employer LCA filings on Migrate Mate
Filter by the Boiler Operator SOC code to see which facilities and utility companies have certified LCAs in your target region. This shows you active sponsoring employers before you spend time applying to companies with no filing history.
Target facilities subject to E-Verify mandates
Federal contractors and subcontractors must use E-Verify, which means their HR teams handle work authorization verification routinely. Power plants and large industrial facilities under federal contracts are more practiced with the H-1B process than smaller private shops.
Request the prevailing wage determination early
Your employer must file an LCA certifying your wage meets the DOL prevailing wage for your location and experience level. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the Level II or Level III rate for SOC 51-8021 in your metro before negotiating your offer.
Document equivalent experience if your degree is non-traditional
USCIS accepts three years of specialized work experience as equivalent to one year of a bachelor's degree for specialty occupation petitions. If your credential is a technical diploma plus years of licensed boiler operation, get notarized experience letters from former employers before the petition is prepared.
Clarify the cap-subject filing timeline with your employer
H-1B cap registrations open in March for an October 1 start date. If you're offered a role outside the lottery cycle, confirm whether the employer qualifies for a cap-exempt filing through a nonprofit or government research entity before accepting.
H-1B Visa Boiler Operator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Boiler Operator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines and documents the position. USCIS requires the role to normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Employers who frame the job around instrumentation engineering, industrial systems, or energy management, and who require a relevant degree, have successfully filed H-1B petitions for boiler operations roles. Positions described purely as skilled trades without a degree requirement typically do not qualify.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Boiler Operators?
Utilities, hospitals, universities, chemical plants, and large manufacturing facilities are the most common H-1B sponsors for this role because they have dedicated HR infrastructure and recurring staffing needs. You can search Migrate Mate by occupation to see which employers have certified LCAs for Boiler Operator positions in your target location, which is a more reliable signal of sponsorship willingness than job postings alone.
How does DOL prevailing wage apply to H-1B Boiler Operator positions?
Your employer must certify an LCA stating your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for the Boiler Operator SOC code in the specific county or metropolitan area where you'll work. The wage level, from Level I to Level IV, reflects your experience and supervisory responsibilities. You can verify the applicable rate using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer is finalized.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Boiler Operator employer mid-status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed with USCIS, without waiting for approval, provided you're in valid status and the petition is non-frivolous. The new employer must file a new LCA for your work location before or with the transfer petition. You don't restart the cap process for a transfer within the same visa category.
Does a state boiler operator license affect the H-1B specialty occupation analysis?
State licensure alone doesn't establish specialty occupation status under USCIS standards, since licensure is based on experience and examination rather than a degree requirement. However, if your employer's job description requires both the license and a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, the combination strengthens the specialty occupation argument. Make sure the job posting and offer letter both reflect the degree requirement explicitly.
