Match your degree to the SOC code
USCIS evaluates whether your engineering degree directly relates to the supervisory role's SOC code. A mismatch between your credential and the occupation code is a common RFE trigger, so confirm alignment before applying.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by their DOL Labor Condition Application history for engineering supervisor roles, so you target companies with a documented record of sponsoring this specific occupation, not just engineering broadly.
Request the prevailing wage tier upfront
Before accepting an offer, ask which DOL prevailing wage level the employer intends to certify. Level I or II wages for supervisory roles can trigger RFEs, since USCIS expects supervisory positions to align with Level III or IV determinations.
Verify the employer's E-Verify enrollment
H-1B employers must be E-Verify participants. Confirm enrollment before investing time in the interview process. An employer not yet enrolled will need to register before USCIS accepts the petition, which can delay your start date.
Document your supervisory scope in writing
Employers must show USCIS the role genuinely requires a specialty degree, not just general management experience. Get a written job description that details the technical engineering decisions you'll own, not just the headcount you'll supervise.
Time your offer around the April cap window
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed after the annual lottery in March, with an October 1 start date. Negotiate your offer letter to reflect a conditional start date so both parties are aligned before USCIS registration opens.

Find Engineering Supervisor JobsEngineering Supervisor H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Engineering Supervisor role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline for the position. The role must involve applying theoretical and practical engineering knowledge, not purely administrative oversight. USCIS scrutinizes supervisory titles closely, so the job description needs to demonstrate that engineering expertise is genuinely required to perform the work, not just preferred.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Engineering Supervisor positions?
Manufacturers, aerospace and defense contractors, semiconductor companies, construction firms, and large infrastructure operators regularly sponsor H-1B petitions for engineering supervisors. The most reliable way to identify sponsors is to search verified LCA filing history on Migrate Mate, which shows which employers have filed for this occupation code rather than relying on employer self-reporting.
Can I change employers on H-1B status while working as an Engineering Supervisor?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, as long as your previous status was lawful and the petition is non-frivolous. The new employer must file a new LCA certified for the work location and SOC code matching your supervisory role before submitting the petition to USCIS.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect Engineering Supervisor offers?
The employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your specific SOC code, experience level, and work location. Engineering Supervisor roles typically fall under Level III or IV on the DOL wage scale. You can verify the applicable wage using the OFLC Wage Search tool and cross-reference it with Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational wage data for your metro area.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Engineering Supervisor role is eliminated?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new H-1B sponsor, change to another valid status, or depart the country. During this window, your new employer can file an H-1B transfer petition and you can begin work once it's filed, not after approval. Acting quickly is critical because the 60-day period doesn't reset with each employer change.
