Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Embedded Systems Engineer
Verify your degree field aligns precisely
USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree directly relates to embedded systems work. A degree in electrical or computer engineering is the strongest fit. Computer science degrees can qualify, but expect an RFE if your coursework lacks hardware or firmware components.
Search LCA filings for embedded roles
Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter Labor Condition Application filings by SOC code 17-2061 (Electrical Engineers) or 15-1252 (Software Developers, Embedded). This shows which employers have actively sponsored H-1B workers in roles matching yours.
Target defense and automotive sector employers
Defense contractors and automotive OEMs file disproportionately high volumes of H-1B petitions for embedded roles. These industries have long product cycles that make multi-year sponsorship practical, and many have dedicated immigration counsel already on retainer.
Find verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter by Embedded Systems Engineer on Migrate Mate to see employers with documented H-1B LCA filing history for this role. This removes guesswork about which companies will sponsor before you invest time in their application process.
Clarify ITAR restrictions before accepting an offer
Many embedded roles at defense contractors fall under International Traffic in Arms Regulations, which restrict access to U.S. nationals only. Confirm whether a role is ITAR-controlled during interviews, as H-1B holders are generally not eligible for those positions regardless of sponsorship.
Confirm the employer files before the cap deadline
H-1B cap registration opens in March each year for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer in May, your earliest possible start under cap-subject H-1B is 16 months away. Discuss timing explicitly so both sides understand the employment gap.

Find Embedded Systems Engineer JobsEmbedded Systems Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Embedded Systems Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies Embedded Systems Engineer positions as specialty occupations when the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a directly related field. Roles requiring only general programming skills without a hardware or firmware component can face RFEs, so the job description needs to reflect the technical specialization clearly.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for embedded engineers?
Semiconductor manufacturers, automotive OEMs, medical device companies, aerospace and defense contractors, and industrial automation firms are among the most active sponsors. Defense contractors are a significant source of embedded roles, but many require U.S. citizenship due to ITAR restrictions, so verify clearance requirements before pursuing those opportunities. Use Migrate Mate to browse employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history in this field.
Can a computer science degree support an H-1B petition for an embedded systems role?
It can, but the connection must be specific. USCIS requires a direct relationship between the degree field and the job duties. A computer science degree with coursework in operating systems, microprocessors, or real-time systems strengthens the case. A general CS degree with no hardware-adjacent coursework is more likely to trigger a Request for Evidence asking for additional documentation of the degree-job nexus.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect embedded engineer job offers?
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your specific role, experience level, and work location before USCIS will approve the H-1B petition. Wage levels are set by the Office of Foreign Labor Certification using the OFLC Wage Search tool. Offers below the Level I or Level II threshold for your metro area can cause the LCA to be denied before the H-1B petition is even filed.
What happens to my H-1B status if my embedded systems project is transferred to a different employer entity?
An H-1B is employer-specific, so a transfer to a new legal entity, even within the same corporate family, typically requires a new H-1B petition filed by the successor employer. Under the AC21 portability rule, you can continue working for the new employer while the petition is pending if your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days and the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification.
