About The Team
Our Robotics team is focused on unlocking general-purpose robotics and pushing towards AGI-level intelligence in dynamic, real-world settings. Working across the entire model stack, we integrate cutting-edge hardware and software to explore a broad range of robotic form factors. We strive to seamlessly blend high-level AI capabilities with the constraints of physical systems to improve peoples’ lives.
About The Role
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, integration, and sustaining engineering of mechanical subsystems in robotic platforms. You will work closely with experienced engineers and cross-functional partners to set functional requirements, develop and iterate on hardware to meet program expectations. This role is aimed at candidates with strong fundamentals in mechanical system design — including tolerance, alignment, load paths, wear, and failure modes — and robotics. You will contribute to real hardware programs moving from prototype through early production. You will lead both new subsystem development and ongoing improvements to existing systems based on testing, field performance, and manufacturing feedback.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA, and requires in-person presence 4 days a week.
In this role, you will
- Lead the design and iteration of mechanical subsystems, including structures, mechanisms, and actuators.
- Create and maintain CAD models, assemblies, and drawings with appropriate tolerancing and documentation.
- Build and test prototypes, supporting debugging of mechanical issues such as fit, alignment, friction, and wear.
- Assist in developing test methods and executing validation to evaluate performance, durability, and failure modes.
- Work with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical components with sensors, actuators, and control systems.
- Support transition of designs from prototype to manufacturable assemblies, incorporating DFM and DFA considerations.
- Collaborate with manufacturing partners and internal build teams to support assembly, troubleshooting, and process improvement.
- Analyze test results and field data to identify issues and drive iterative design improvements.
- Document designs, test results, and changes to support repeatability and production readiness.
- Support sustaining engineering efforts by investigating failures, tracking issues, and implementing corrective actions.
You might thrive in this role if you
- Have strong mechanical intuition and have previous experience lead mechanical design for robotic subsystems.
- Enjoy hands-on work building, testing, and debugging physical systems.
- Are comfortable iterating quickly and learning from incomplete or evolving requirements.
- Can break down problems and work through details such as tolerances, interfaces, and assembly constraints.
- Are proactive in seeking feedback and alignment with cross-functional partners.
- Are detail-oriented and value clear documentation and repeatability.
- Have experience scaling physical products from prototyping through high volume production.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years experience in mechanical design, robotics, or electromechanical systems.
- Experience with CAD tools (e.g., NX, SolidWorks, or similar).
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as machining, molding, or basic fabrication methods.
- Familiarity with high volume GD&T, engineering drawings and tolerancing practices.
- Experience with prototyping, lab work, or hardware bring-up.
- Experience working on multidisciplinary projects involving hardware and software integration.

Align your degree to SOC 17-2141
USCIS evaluates specialty occupation by matching your degree field to the role. A mechanical engineering or related engineering degree maps cleanly to SOC 17-2141, but a general science or physics degree may trigger an RFE. Pull the O*NET profile to confirm the required knowledge domains before applying.
Search LCA filings by engineering occupation
Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter Labor Condition Applications by SOC 17-2141 and location. Employers who filed LCAs in the past two years for Mechanical Design Engineer roles have an active sponsorship infrastructure, making them far stronger targets than companies with no filing history.
Target employers verified through Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate surfaces companies with verified H-1B LCA filing history filtered to mechanical design roles, so you're not cold-applying to employers who've never sponsored. Filter by state or industry sector to narrow your list before your first outreach.
Document your CAD and toolchain credentials early
Petitions for design engineers are strengthened by licenses, certifications, and tool-specific credentials like SOLIDWORKS certifications or a Professional Engineer license. Gather these before offer stage so your employer's attorney can reference them when establishing specialty occupation in the I-129.
Clarify cap timing with your offer stage
H-1B petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start. If you receive an offer outside that window, ask the employer whether they qualify for cap-exempt filing through a university or nonprofit research affiliation, or whether a cap-gap extension applies if you're transitioning from OPT.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier covers your role
DOL requires employers to pay at least the prevailing wage for the position's SOC code and work location. Ask HR which wage level they're filing at before signing an offer. Level I wages are for entry roles; a senior design position filed at Level I can draw USCIS scrutiny.
H-1B Visa Mechanical Design Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Mechanical Design Engineer roles qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Mechanical Design Engineer falls under SOC code 17-2141 and requires at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field, which satisfies USCIS's specialty occupation definition. The O*NET profile documents the theoretical and applied knowledge required, and employers routinely reference it when building the specialty occupation argument in the I-129 petition.
Which industries file the most H-1B petitions for Mechanical Design Engineers?
Aerospace and defense, medical device manufacturing, automotive systems, and industrial equipment are the heaviest filers for this role. Companies in these sectors often maintain in-house immigration teams that process H-1B petitions routinely. You can verify an employer's filing activity by searching LCA disclosure data through the OFLC Wage Search before you apply. Migrate Mate also surfaces employers with verified filing history for mechanical design roles.
Can a Professional Engineer license strengthen my H-1B petition as a Mechanical Design Engineer?
It can, though it isn't required. A PE license signals that you meet a state-regulated professional standard in mechanical engineering, which supports the specialty occupation argument and can reduce the risk of an RFE. If your role involves signing off on engineering drawings or working on projects subject to professional certification requirements, having or pursuing a PE license is worth discussing with your sponsoring employer's attorney before filing.
What happens to my H-1B status if I switch from one Mechanical Design Engineer role to another employer?
H-1B portability under AC21 lets you transfer to a new employer once your petition has been pending for 180 days or more, as long as the new role is in the same or similar SOC classification. Your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition with USCIS, and you can typically start work as soon as the receipt notice is issued. Keep your prior I-797 approval and pay stubs in hand for the transfer filing.
How do I find Mechanical Design Engineer jobs where employers are actively sponsoring H-1B visas?
The most reliable approach is to target employers who have already filed LCAs for this specific SOC code rather than assuming general engineering firms sponsor. Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified H-1B LCA filing history, so every employer you see has a documented record of sponsoring roles in this occupation. Cross-referencing with the OFLC Wage Search gives you additional detail on wage levels and job locations before you apply.
