H-1B Visa Test Engineer Jobs
Test Engineer roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Employers filing on your behalf must certify a prevailing wage through the DOL before USCIS adjudicates the petition. The 85,000-slot annual cap and April lottery mean timing your job search matters.

Frame your degree for specialty occupation
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to directly relate to test engineering. A general IT or business degree can trigger an RFE. Pull up your O*NET occupation profile and map your coursework to the listed knowledge domains before applying.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers first
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Prioritizing E-Verify employers now shortens the transition path to H-1B and signals the employer already has compliance infrastructure for sponsored hires.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating salary
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your location and SOC code. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your metro area before your offer negotiation so you understand the floor they're legally bound to meet.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified H-1B sponsors
Filter your test engineer job search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for engineering roles, so you're not guessing which companies actually sponsor rather than just claiming they do.
Ask about cap-exempt filing eligibility early
If a prospective employer is a university, nonprofit research institution, or government research organization, their H-1B petitions are cap-exempt and can be filed any time of year. Confirm the employer's cap-exempt status before the lottery deadline passes.
Time your I-129 filing for premium processing
USCIS standard processing for an I-129 petition can run several months. Request premium processing from your employer if your OPT or CPT expiry date is close, since USCIS guarantees a 15-business-day adjudication decision under that option.
H-1B Visa Test Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Test Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as electrical engineering, computer science, or systems engineering. Generic titles don't automatically qualify. The employer must demonstrate in the LCA and I-129 that the specific role, as they've defined it, requires that theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Test Engineer positions?
Hardware manufacturers, defense contractors, automotive OEMs, semiconductor firms, and enterprise software companies are among the most consistent H-1B sponsors for test engineering roles. To identify employers with verified LCA filing history specific to this occupation, browse Test Engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which surfaces companies based on actual DOL filing data rather than self-reported claims.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Test Engineer contract ends early?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new sponsoring employer, file a change of status, or depart the U.S. Your new employer must file a new H-1B petition before that window closes. If you're on a project-based contract, confirm whether the contracting firm or the end client is the H-1B petitioner, since that determines who is responsible for the transfer.
Can a staffing agency sponsor my H-1B as a Test Engineer?
Yes, staffing agencies and third-party placement firms regularly sponsor H-1B petitions for test engineers placed at client sites. USCIS scrutinizes these arrangements more heavily, requiring clear evidence of the employer-employee relationship and that the specialty occupation requirement is met at the end-client site, not just at the staffing firm level. Request a copy of the end-client letter before signing.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage apply to Test Engineer roles?
The DOL assigns a prevailing wage to your specific SOC code and work location, and your employer must certify your offered wage meets or exceeds it on the LCA. Test engineering wages vary significantly by industry and metro area. You can verify the applicable wage tier for your location and job duties using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating any offer.
