- Proficiency in performing tolerance analyses
- Working knowledge of FEA principles
- Practical experience working through DFM challenges with external vendors
- Wide knowledge of basic engineering materials and manufacturing processes
- Experience with vendor FAI/CPK dimensional reports
- Consumer electronics knowledge in a majority of these disciplines: industrial design, optics and lenses, cameras, sensors, displays, PCBs and flexes, silicon, antennas, batteries, thermals
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) including emails, preparing slide presentations, and presenting technical concepts to multi-disciplinary teams
- Creative problem solving, with experience in failure analysis, root cause investigation, and DOE creation
- Experience collaborating with Asian manufacturing facilities, specifically in high-volume mass production
- Travel will be 10-25% and you must be willing to move to the Bay Area.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Product Design Engineer
Verify your SOC code before applying
Product Design Engineer maps to multiple SOC codes depending on the industry. Pull the O*NET profile for your target title and confirm the code your employer plans to use matches your degree field, since mismatches trigger RFEs.
Prioritize employers with active LCA history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Product Design Engineer roles by verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings, so you're only targeting companies that have already demonstrated H-1B sponsorship capacity for this specific occupation.
Document your CAD and prototyping credentials specifically
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims for design roles. Gather employer letters, project portfolios, and degree transcripts that link your specific engineering coursework directly to the product design functions in the job description.
Ask about the LCA wage level at the offer stage
The DOL assigns wage levels 1 through 4 on your LCA. Level 1 can raise RFE risk for experienced candidates. Cross-check the offered wage level against the OFLC Wage Search for your job title and work location before signing.
Target hardware-heavy industries with cap-exempt options
Medical device manufacturers, defense contractors, and university-affiliated research labs frequently sponsor Product Design Engineers and some qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, letting you file outside the annual lottery window entirely.
File premium processing if your start date is fixed
Product design roles often have hardware launch timelines tied to a start date. USCIS premium processing guarantees a decision within 15 business days, protecting your project assignment if your manager has already scheduled your onboarding.

Find Product Design Engineer JobsProduct Design Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Design Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the job requires at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or a closely related field. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field can fail the specialty occupation test. Make sure the job description specifies the required degree field and that your employer's LCA reflects a position-specific wage level.
Which industries hire the most Product Design Engineers on H-1B sponsorship?
Consumer electronics, medical devices, automotive, and industrial equipment companies generate the highest volume of H-1B LCA filings for product design roles. Defense contractors and hardware startups with Series B or later funding rounds also sponsor regularly. You can browse current openings from verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate filtered specifically to this job title.
Can I switch employers mid-H-1B if I'm a Product Design Engineer?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer once they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as you've maintained valid status. The new employer must file a fresh LCA certified by DOL at the prevailing wage for the new work location before submitting the I-129 petition to USCIS.
What documents does my employer need to support my H-1B petition for a Product Design Engineer role?
Your employer needs a certified LCA from DOL, a detailed job duty description tying the role to your engineering degree, your transcripts and any credential evaluations, and evidence the position qualifies as specialty occupation. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a foreign credential evaluation aligning it to a U.S. bachelor's in the relevant engineering field is critical for avoiding an RFE.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect Product Design Engineer job searches?
Most Product Design Engineer positions at private companies are subject to the annual H-1B cap of 65,000 regular slots plus 20,000 master's cap exemptions. Registration opens in March each year and selection is random. If you're not selected, targeting cap-exempt employers such as nonprofit research institutions or universities can let you file outside the lottery cycle entirely.
