Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Mechanic
Verify your role meets specialty occupation
Pull the O*NET profile for your specific mechanic title, aircraft, industrial, or automotive. USCIS requires the position to normally demand a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, not just technical training or an associate degree.
Target aerospace and defense employers first
Aerospace maintenance and avionics roles at FAA-certified repair stations are the most consistent H-1B pathway for mechanics. These employers routinely file LCAs for degree-required technician and engineer-adjacent positions that qualify as specialty occupations.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Migrate Mate by mechanic job titles and H-1B filing history to identify employers who have successfully sponsored this role before. Past LCA filings are the strongest signal that an employer understands the process and will do it again.
Get your foreign credentials formally evaluated
If your mechanical engineering or aerospace degree was earned outside the U.S., obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency before applying. USCIS adjudicators will assess equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree, and an unverified credential is a common RFE trigger.
Confirm the employer is E-Verify enrolled
H-1B employers are required to use E-Verify for sponsored employees. Before accepting an offer, confirm enrollment status directly with HR. An employer not yet enrolled will need to register before USCIS processes your petition, which can delay your start date.
Negotiate filing before your OPT or grace period ends
If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, your employer must file the H-1B petition with USCIS before your authorized period expires. Cap-subject filings open in March for an October 1 start, so align your offer timeline with the registration window.
H-1B Visa Mechanic: Frequently Asked Questions
Do mechanic jobs actually qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Most general mechanic roles don't qualify because they don't require a bachelor's degree in a specific field. However, aerospace mechanics, avionics technicians, and industrial maintenance engineers at companies requiring an engineering degree for the role can qualify. The job description must establish that a specialized degree is a normal requirement, not a preference.
How do I find employers who have sponsored H-1B visas for mechanics before?
Migrate Mate shows verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history by employer and job title, so you can see which companies have filed for mechanic or engineering technician roles. This is more reliable than assuming any large manufacturer sponsors, LCA data shows which employers have actually gone through the process.
What wage level does my employer need to pay under H-1B rules?
Your employer must certify through a DOL Labor Condition Application that your wage meets at least the prevailing wage for your mechanic occupation and geographic area. The OFLC Wage Search tool shows the four DOL wage levels by occupation and location. Employers who offer below the Level I threshold will have the LCA rejected before USCIS ever sees the petition.
Can my employer file H-1B for me if I only have a two-year technical degree?
Not directly. USCIS requires a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent in a relevant field. If you hold a two-year degree, you can potentially establish equivalency through a combination of additional coursework and progressive work experience, typically three years of specialized experience per year of missing education, evaluated by a credentials expert.
Is the H-1B lottery a problem for mechanic roles at cap-exempt employers?
Mechanic positions at universities, nonprofit research organizations, and certain government-affiliated institutions are cap-exempt, meaning your employer can file any time without entering the lottery. If you're targeting private-sector manufacturers or aerospace companies, those petitions are cap-subject and must be filed during the annual March registration window for an October 1 start date.
