H-1B Visa Welder Jobs
Welder roles can qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as welding engineering or materials science. Employers in aerospace, defense, and heavy manufacturing have filed LCAs for welding-related specialty occupation roles, making targeted job searching essential.

Verify your degree matches the role
USCIS requires your degree field to align directly with the welding position, not just manufacturing broadly. A welding engineering or materials science degree strengthens your specialty occupation argument far more than a general engineering credential.
Search DOL LCA filings by occupation
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up certified LCAs filed under SOC code 51-4121 for welders. This shows which employers have already established prevailing wage compliance for welding roles, cutting your research time significantly.
Target aerospace and defense manufacturers
Employers in aerospace, shipbuilding, and defense contracting routinely sponsor H-1B welders for precision and specialty roles. These industries require documented technical credentials, which aligns with USCIS specialty occupation standards better than general fabrication shops.
Find verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Migrate Mate by the Welder job category to see employers with active H-1B filing history for your occupation. This surfaces companies already familiar with sponsoring technical manufacturing roles, reducing the education gap with HR teams.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your sponsoring employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to support your H-1B petition. Ask hiring managers directly during the offer stage. Discovering this late can delay your start date or force you to restart the employer search.
Negotiate your start date around the cap timeline
H-1B cap filings open in March for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer in late spring, discuss a conditional start date with your employer so both sides plan around the filing window rather than an immediate hire.

Find Welder JobsWelder H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Welder role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Most general welding jobs don't qualify because USCIS requires the position to normally demand a bachelor's degree in a specific related field. Welding engineering, materials science, or metallurgy roles at aerospace or defense employers are more likely to meet the specialty occupation standard. Your employer's job description must show the degree requirement is genuine and industry-standard for that specific role.
Which industries are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for Welder positions?
Aerospace, shipbuilding, defense contracting, and nuclear energy employers regularly sponsor H-1B visas for welders in precision or engineering-adjacent roles. These industries require documented technical credentials and have established LCA filing histories. You can identify employers with active H-1B filing records for welding occupations by browsing Migrate Mate, which filters job listings by verified sponsorship history.
How does prevailing wage work for H-1B Welder jobs?
Your employer must pay you at least the prevailing wage for welders in the job's geographic area, as determined by DOL wage levels. The OFLC Wage Search tool lets you look up the applicable wage level before negotiations. Wages are tied to the specific SOC code your employer selects, so the classification of your role directly affects the required minimum.
Can I use my OPT or STEM OPT to work as a Welder while waiting for H-1B selection?
Yes, if your degree field directly relates to the welding role, OPT or STEM OPT authorization allows you to work for a sponsoring employer before your H-1B petition is filed or selected. Your employer can file your H-1B petition during the March registration window, and cap-gap protection extends your OPT work authorization through September 30 if your OPT expires before the October 1 start date.
What credentials strengthen an H-1B petition for a Welder role?
A bachelor's degree or higher in welding engineering, metallurgical engineering, or materials science is the foundation. AWS Certified Welding Inspector credentials, specialized certifications in aerospace or nuclear welding standards, and documented experience with high-specification alloys all reinforce the specialty occupation argument. USCIS reviews whether the employer's job duties genuinely require that level of theoretical knowledge, so the employer's written justification in the petition matters as much as your credentials.
