H-1B Visa Marine Technician Jobs
Marine Technician roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a specialized degree in marine engineering, naval architecture, or a directly related technical field. Employers in shipbuilding, offshore energy, and vessel maintenance file LCAs with the DOL before sponsoring, and the 85,000-slot annual cap applies unless your employer holds cap-exempt status.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Marine Technician
Verify your degree field matches the role
H-1B eligibility for Marine Technician positions hinges on your degree being in a directly related field, such as marine engineering or naval architecture. A general mechanical engineering degree may trigger an RFE if the job description doesn't clearly require that specialization.
Target cap-exempt employers first
Shipyards and marine contractors affiliated with universities or nonprofit research institutions file outside the H-1B lottery. Government-owned shipbuilding facilities and NOAA-affiliated research operations are worth prioritizing if you need certainty over timing.
Search H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Pull DOL Labor Condition Application data on Migrate Mate to see which marine employers have sponsored this exact role before. Filing history by occupation code tells you which companies are structurally set up to sponsor, not just willing in principle.
Request the LCA before signing your offer
Ask your employer to share the certified LCA before you accept. It confirms the prevailing wage level, the worksite location, and the occupation classification. A mismatch between the LCA job title and your actual duties is a common source of USCIS scrutiny at adjudication.
Check your O*NET classification before filing
Marine Technician roles span multiple O*NET codes depending on whether the work is diagnostic, repair-focused, or engineering-adjacent. The SOC code your employer selects on the LCA determines which prevailing wage tier applies, so confirm it reflects your actual duties using O*NET.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Look up the prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and worksite ZIP code using the OFLC Wage Search before your employer files the LCA. If the offered wage falls below Level I or Level II for your area, USCIS can deny the petition on prevailing wage grounds.

Find Marine Technician JobsMarine Technician H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Marine Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the position is defined. USCIS evaluates whether the role normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field, not just technical skills or certifications. Marine Technician jobs focused on diagnostics, systems integration, or engineering analysis are stronger candidates than general repair roles. Your employer's job description and the SOC code selected on the LCA both factor into the adjudication.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for Marine Technician positions?
Shipbuilding and repair yards, offshore oil and gas operators, marine survey firms, and government defense contractors are the most active sponsors for this role. Research vessels operated by universities or NOAA affiliates also hire under H-1B, and those employers are often cap-exempt. You can browse verified sponsoring employers for Marine Technician roles on Migrate Mate using DOL LCA filing data.
Can my employer file the H-1B petition if the work site changes between vessels or ports?
Yes, but the LCA must reflect the appropriate worksite or include a valid itinerary if you're working at multiple locations. DOL rules require a new or amended LCA when you move to a worksite in a different metropolitan statistical area for more than 60 consecutive workdays. Short-term assignments typically fall under the short-term placement exception, but your employer should document each assignment carefully to avoid a compliance issue.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect my timeline as a Marine Technician job seeker?
If your employer is cap-subject, USCIS opens registration each March for fiscal year petitions that start October 1. Selection is randomized, so there's no guarantee even with a strong application. Cap-exempt employers, such as those affiliated with nonprofit research institutions or universities, can file at any time of year, which gives you more predictable start dates.
What documentation should I prepare to support a specialty occupation argument for a Marine Technician H-1B?
Your employer needs to show the role normally requires a specific bachelor's degree, not just any technical background. Useful evidence includes the job posting requiring a degree in marine engineering or naval architecture, industry wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing degree requirements for the occupation, and a detailed duties letter from your employer linking each core responsibility to your educational background.
