Verify your role meets specialty occupation
Installer positions vary widely. Pull the O*NET profile for your specific SOC code and confirm the typical entry requirement is a bachelor's degree. Without that, USCIS will likely issue an RFE questioning specialty occupation status.
Check prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing wage for your SOC code and geographic area.
Target industries with consistent LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Installer openings by employers who have certified LCAs for this occupation. Telecommunications infrastructure, commercial solar, and industrial controls firms file most consistently for installation roles.
Get your credentials evaluated before applying
If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before submitting applications. Employers sponsoring H-1B petitions need documentation showing your degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status early
Nonprofits, government research labs, and universities affiliated with qualifying entities are cap-exempt, meaning they can file an H-1B petition at any time without waiting for the October lottery. For Installer roles in research infrastructure, this matters.
Confirm the employer files before the lottery deadline
H-1B registration opens in March each year. If you're interviewing in late fall or winter, ask whether the employer plans to register you in the upcoming cycle. Missing the registration window means waiting another full year.
H-1B Visa Installer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Installer jobs qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Installer roles qualify when the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field like electrical engineering, construction technology, or systems integration. Roles that accept any degree or no degree typically fail the specialty occupation test. Your job offer letter and the employer's internal job requirements both factor into how USCIS evaluates the petition.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for Installer roles?
Telecommunications infrastructure, commercial solar installation, industrial automation, and data center buildout firms are the most active sponsors for Installer positions. These sectors routinely file Labor Condition Applications for roles requiring degree-level technical knowledge. Browse Installer openings on Migrate Mate to see which specific employers have active H-1B filing history for this occupation.
What SOC code is typically used for Installer H-1B petitions?
It depends on the specific role. Electrical and electronics installers often fall under SOC 49-2090s, while telecommunications equipment installers use SOC 49-2022. The SOC code your employer selects on the LCA determines the prevailing wage level USCIS and DOL use to evaluate the petition, so confirming the correct code before filing matters.
Can my employer file an H-1B for an Installer role mid-year?
Only if the employer is cap-exempt. Standard H-1B petitions are subject to the annual cap and require registration during the March lottery window for an October 1 start date. Cap-exempt employers, including qualifying nonprofits and research institutions, can file at any point in the year. Confirm your prospective employer's cap status before accepting an offer.
What documentation supports an H-1B petition for an Installer position?
You'll need a certified LCA from DOL, a job offer letter that specifies the degree requirement, your academic transcripts, and a credential evaluation if your degree is foreign. If your degree field doesn't directly match the installation specialty, a detailed letter from the employer explaining why the role requires that specific background helps address likely USCIS scrutiny.
