Match your degree to the role
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree field and the Media Director position. A degree in communications, marketing, or advertising supports the petition. A business degree alone may trigger an RFE if the job description emphasizes creative strategy.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter Labor Condition Applications by the SOC code for Advertising and Promotions Managers. This shows you which employers have actively filed for roles matching Media Director, not just which ones have H-1B programs generally.
Target employers with cap-exempt status
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with higher education, and government research organizations are cap-exempt. If you're open to in-house media roles at these institutions, you can file outside the April lottery window and start any time of year.
Check your prevailing wage level before negotiating
DOL assigns your LCA a wage level from I to IV based on experience and supervisory responsibility. Media Director titles typically land at Level III or IV. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the prevailing wage for your metro area before accepting an offer.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Search Media Director roles on Migrate Mate to filter for employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. This cuts out companies that list the title but have never filed a petition, saving you from pursuing offers that stall at the sponsorship conversation.
Get your portfolio documentation H-1B ready
Your employer will need to establish specialty occupation in the I-129 petition. Prepare a resume that maps each role to specific degree-level skills, and gather any campaign case studies or strategic plans that demonstrate the analytical and technical scope of your work.
H-1B Visa Media Director: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Media Director role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, if the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field like communications, marketing, advertising, or a related discipline. Roles that accept any degree or substitute extensive experience without a degree requirement are harder to approve. The job description needs to reflect the theoretical and practical application of that specialized knowledge.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Media Director positions?
Large advertising holding companies, broadcast networks, streaming platforms, and major brands with in-house media teams are the most active sponsors. Smaller independent agencies sponsor less frequently. You can find employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for media and advertising roles on Migrate Mate, which filters by occupation code and filing history.
How does the H-1B cap and lottery affect Media Director candidates?
Most private-sector Media Director roles fall under the 85,000-slot annual H-1B cap, which is subject to a random lottery in years when registrations exceed the cap. Your employer registers you in March, USCIS selects winners in April, and the petition is filed for an October 1 start date. Cap-exempt employers like universities can file year-round outside this cycle.
Can I change employers as an H-1B Media Director without losing my status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new I-129 petition on your behalf, as long as your prior H-1B was approved, you've maintained valid status, and the new role is in a same or similar specialty occupation. You don't need to wait for the new petition to be approved.
What documentation does an employer need to sponsor a Media Director on H-1B?
The employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL certifying the offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for the role and location. They then file Form I-129 with USCIS, including evidence that the position is a specialty occupation, a copy of your degree, and proof of relevant experience. Your official transcripts and any credential evaluations should be ready before the employer starts the LCA.
