Document your domain expertise precisely
H-1B1 visa requires a specialty occupation tied to a specific field. Compile degree transcripts, publications, certifications, and a clear record linking your Subject Matter Expert role to that academic discipline before you approach any employer.
Target employers with existing H-1B1 filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter for companies that have already filed Labor Condition Applications for Subject Matter Expert or closely related specialty roles, so you approach employers who understand the H-1B1 Singapore process rather than educating them from scratch.
Verify your role qualifies under O*NET
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for your Subject Matter Expert specialty and confirm it lists a bachelor's degree or higher as a standard entry requirement. Consulates scrutinize this, and a clear O*NET match strengthens your visa application considerably.
Request a DOL-certified LCA before negotiating final terms
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL and receive certification before your consulate appointment. Confirm the LCA is underway during offer negotiation, not after signing, so you don't lose weeks waiting on the employer's legal team.
Check your offered wage against OFLC Wage Search
Look up the prevailing wage for your specific Subject Matter Expert role and work location using the OFLC Wage Search tool. If your offer falls below the Level II or Level III wage for your occupation, the LCA will not be certified.
Prepare for consular scrutiny on employer legitimacy
Unlike H-1B visa, the H-1B1 is adjudicated at the U.S. consulate in Singapore without prior USCIS approval. Bring your employer's financial statements, organizational chart showing your reporting line, and a detailed offer letter describing your Subject Matter Expert responsibilities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Subject Matter Expert role qualify as a specialty occupation under the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field directly related to your area of expertise. Generic advisory or consulting titles can create problems if the employer's job description doesn't tie the role to a defined academic discipline. Cross-reference the O*NET occupation profile for your specialty and ensure your offer letter reflects those degree requirements explicitly.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa differ from the H-1B for Subject Matter Expert roles?
The H-1B1 has no lottery, no USCIS petition, and a dedicated annual allocation of 5,400 visas for Singaporean nationals that has never been exhausted. You apply directly at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore after your employer obtains a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL. H-1B requires USCIS to approve a full petition first, which adds months and lottery uncertainty that the H-1B1 avoids entirely.
How do I find employers who will sponsor an H-1B1 Singapore visa for a Subject Matter Expert position?
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for Subject Matter Expert and closely related specialty roles. Employers with prior LCA filing history already have relationships with immigration counsel familiar with the H-1B1 process, which makes the sponsorship conversation significantly more efficient than approaching employers who have never sponsored a Singaporean national.
Can I switch Subject Matter Expert employers while on an H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes, but the H-1B1 does not carry H-1B portability protections. You cannot begin working for a new employer the moment they file a transfer petition. Your new employer must complete a fresh Labor Condition Application with DOL and you must obtain a new H-1B1 stamp at the consulate before starting the role, so plan the transition timeline accordingly.
What documentation does a Subject Matter Expert applicant need for the H-1B1 Singapore consulate interview?
Bring your certified LCA, a detailed offer letter specifying your role's duties and the degree field required, your academic transcripts, and any professional certifications or publications supporting your claimed expertise. The consulate officer assesses specialty occupation eligibility directly, so documentation that maps your credentials to the specific Subject Matter Expert domain is more persuasive than a general resume.
