Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Maintenance Jobs
Pull your O*NET profile before applying
Maintenance roles under H-2A visa are classified by specific DOL occupation codes. Pull your O*NET profile for agricultural equipment repair or general maintenance to confirm which tasks match your experience before employers review your application.
Verify the AEWR rate for your state
H-2A maintenance wages are set by the DOL Adverse Effect Wage Rate, which varies by state and changes annually. Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the current rate for the state where you'll work before accepting any offer.
Target employers with active H-2A job orders
Search Migrate Mate to find agricultural employers who've already filed H-2A job orders for maintenance roles. These employers have passed DOL recruitment requirements, so you're entering a pipeline that's built for sponsorship rather than cold-pitching unprepared hiring managers.
Document your equipment certifications now
Farms frequently list tractor operation, welding, or irrigation system repair as required skills. Gather any certifications or prior employer letters confirming hands-on maintenance experience before you apply. Gaps in documentation are a common reason offers stall.
Ask employers about the three-fourths guarantee
H-2A law requires employers to offer you work for at least three-fourths of the contract period. Get the total workweek hours in writing before your start date so you know the minimum hours you're protected for under federal regulations.
Confirm the job order period of need matches your availability
USCIS approves H-2A petitions for specific start and end dates tied to the employer's agricultural calendar. Make sure the job order's period of need aligns with your actual availability, since arriving after the start date can complicate your status.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Maintenance jobs with H-2A visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search for agricultural maintenance positions where the employer has already committed to H-2A sponsorship. Because H-2A requires employers to file a job order with DOL before hiring, every listing you find this way comes with sponsorship built into the role rather than being something you negotiate after the fact.
What housing and transportation obligations does an H-2A employer have for maintenance workers?
Your H-2A employer must provide free housing that meets federal and state safety standards for the entire contract period, including any time before work begins. They're also required to cover transportation costs from your home country to the worksite and back at the end of your contract, plus daily transportation between your housing and the job.
Can a maintenance role qualify for H-2A if the work isn't directly in the fields?
Yes. DOL allows H-2A certification for maintenance positions that support agricultural operations, such as repairing irrigation systems, maintaining farm equipment, or keeping facilities operational during planting or harvest seasons. The role must be temporary or seasonal and tied to the employer's agricultural production cycle, not a year-round permanent position.
What happens if my H-2A contract ends early due to equipment downtime or weather delays?
H-2A regulations include a three-fourths guarantee: your employer must offer you work for at least three-fourths of the workdays in the contract period. If they can't provide that, they're required to pay you for the missed hours anyway. If the job order is terminated entirely before completion, the employer must also cover your return transportation costs.
