Pull your O*NET profile before applying
Service Technician roles under H-2A must match an agricultural occupation. Pull the O*NET profile for your specific equipment specialization and confirm the duties align with seasonal crop or livestock operations before targeting employers.
Target employers with SCA or OFLC history
Growers who have filed H-2A job orders before know the housing, transportation, and wage compliance requirements. Search OFLC disclosure data for employers who listed Service Technician or equipment maintenance roles in prior seasons.
Verify your wage offer against the AEWR
Your offer letter must meet or exceed the Adverse Effect Wage Rate for the state where you'll work. Cross-check the posted wage using the OFLC Wage Search before signing anything so you catch underpayment before the petition is filed.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified H-2A employers
Filter for Service Technician roles with confirmed H-2A sponsorship history on Migrate Mate. Employers listed there have DOL filing records attached, so you're not cold-applying to operations that have never sponsored a temporary agricultural worker.
Document equipment certifications before the season
H-2A employers must justify why domestic workers can't fill the role. Having current certifications for irrigation, tractor, or refrigeration systems on hand strengthens your application file and supports the employer's labor market test at DOL.
Confirm housing proximity to the worksite
Employers are legally required to provide free housing, but the location varies. Before your I-9 is completed and you're on-site, confirm in writing that the provided housing meets the distance and habitability standards set out in your job order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find Service Technician jobs with H-2A sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point. It filters Service Technician listings to employers with confirmed H-2A filing history, so you're not guessing which operations are willing to sponsor. You can also search OFLC disclosure data directly for employers who have listed equipment maintenance or repair roles in prior H-2A job orders, then approach them directly before the season opens.
What housing and transportation obligations does an H-2A employer have for a Service Technician?
Your H-2A employer must provide free housing for the duration of your work contract and transport you from your home country to the worksite, then back when the contract ends. They must also cover daily transportation between housing and the job. Housing must meet federal or state occupational safety standards, and the cost cannot be deducted from your wages.
Does my Service Technician role need to be tied to a specific crop or season?
Yes. H-2A is limited to temporary or seasonal agricultural work, so your Service Technician duties must be directly tied to a defined agricultural production cycle. Maintaining irrigation systems during a planting season or servicing harvest equipment during a harvest window qualifies. Year-round general facility maintenance, without a seasonal agricultural connection, does not meet H-2A eligibility criteria under DOL regulations.
Can I change employers mid-season if my H-2A Service Technician job ends early?
H-2A status is tied to a specific employer and job order, so you can't switch employers without a new petition being filed. If your role ends before the contract period closes, your authorized stay ends with it. A new employer would need to file a separate H-2A petition and obtain a new approved job order from DOL before you can begin work for them.
