Document your diesel equipment experience specifically
H-2A visa employers filing for Diesel Mechanic roles must prove a genuine labor shortage. List every agricultural machine you've serviced, combines, sprayers, balers, because vague 'mechanic experience' rarely satisfies DOL's job duty verification during the certification review.
Search verified H-2A employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find agricultural operations with active H-2A filing history for Diesel Mechanic roles. Filtering by employers who've filed before cuts guesswork and connects you to operations already familiar with the sponsorship process.
Target multi-commodity farms with year-round equipment fleets
Large operations running row crops, orchards, and livestock simultaneously need mechanics across overlapping seasons. These employers file H-2A petitions repeatedly and are more likely to extend your contract or refile for the following cycle.
Understand the job order before you sign anything
DOL requires employers to file a clearance order detailing your duties, housing location, and wage rate before USCIS sees the petition. Ask to review this document, discrepancies between the job order and your actual role can create compliance problems mid-season.
Check the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
H-2A employers must pay whichever is higher: the Adverse Effect Wage Rate or the prevailing wage for your specific county and occupation. Run an OFLC Wage Search for your state and SOC code so you know the floor before your employer quotes a figure.
Confirm housing meets DOL standards before arrival
H-2A housing is employer-provided and must pass a federal or state inspection before workers arrive. Ask for the inspection certificate and confirm the facility accommodates your arrival date, delays in inspection clearance have left workers without housing on day one.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Diesel Mechanic jobs with H-2A visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point, it surfaces agricultural employers with verified H-2A filing history for Diesel Mechanic roles, so you're not guessing which operations are actually willing to sponsor. Look specifically for farms, feedlots, and harvest contractors running large equipment fleets, since those operations file H-2A petitions repeatedly and need qualified mechanics each season.
What obligations does an H-2A employer have when hiring a Diesel Mechanic?
H-2A employers must provide free housing that passes a DOL-required inspection, cover inbound and outbound transportation costs, and pay at minimum the Adverse Effect Wage Rate for your state or the prevailing wage for the occupation, whichever is higher. They also cover workers' compensation insurance and must guarantee pay for at least 75 percent of the work hours listed in your contract, even if work is unavailable.
Does H-2A sponsorship cover diesel mechanics working on non-crop equipment like irrigation systems?
Yes, as long as the work is tied to an agricultural operation and is temporary or seasonal in nature. Mechanics maintaining irrigation infrastructure, grain handling equipment, or livestock feeding systems on farms regularly qualify. DOL evaluates the job duties and the employer's agricultural classification, not just the machinery type, when certifying the H-2A application.
Can my H-2A status be extended if the harvest season runs longer than expected?
Your employer can file an extension petition with USCIS before your authorized period expires, as long as the total duration remains within the three-year maximum for continuous H-2A stay. Extensions must be tied to the same agricultural need and filed in advance, overstaying your authorized period without an approved extension creates a status violation that affects future visa eligibility.
