Verify your mechanical credentials match job listings
H-2A visa job orders filed with DOL specify exact equipment types, from irrigation pumps to combine harvesters. Pull up the O*NET profile for Maintenance Mechanic to confirm your documented skills and certifications align with what agricultural employers are required to advertise.
Target employers filing early in the season
H-2A petitions must be filed at least 45 days before your start date. Farms recruiting for spring planting or early harvest cycles post job orders first. Focusing on these early listings gives you more lead time before the worksite start date locks in.
Search verified H-2A sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter for agricultural employers with active H-2A filing history for Maintenance Mechanic roles. Seeing which operations have sponsored this position before tells you where your application is most likely to move forward quickly.
Confirm the job order covers your full contract period
DOL-certified H-2A job orders specify exact employment dates. Make sure any offer you receive covers the entire period you intend to work. Gaps between contracts are not covered by your visa status, and a shortened season could trigger early departure obligations.
Ask the employer about housing arrangements before signing
H-2A employers are legally required to provide free housing meeting federal or state standards. For maintenance roles, worksites are often remote. Confirm whether housing is on-farm or at a separate facility and whether transport to the worksite is included in the offer.
Understand how the AEWR affects your wage guarantee
USCIS requires employers to pay you at least the AEWR for your state, which DOL updates annually. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the current rate for agricultural workers in the state where the job is located before you accept any offer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Maintenance Mechanic jobs with H-2A visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces agricultural employers with verified H-2A filing history for Maintenance Mechanic roles, so you're not sorting through listings that don't offer sponsorship. Filter by state and season to find operations actively recruiting for the contract period that fits your availability.
What housing and transportation must H-2A employers provide for this role?
H-2A employers are legally required to provide free housing that meets federal or state standards for the full duration of your contract. They must also cover inbound transportation from your home country and outbound transportation home after the contract ends. For Maintenance Mechanic positions, which are often on remote agricultural sites, confirm whether daily transport to the worksite is also included before you accept an offer.
Does a Maintenance Mechanic role qualify as an agricultural job under H-2A?
Maintenance Mechanic positions qualify when the work is directly tied to seasonal agricultural operations, such as repairing irrigation systems, farm machinery, or processing equipment during the harvest period. The DOL-certified job order must define the role as temporary or seasonal in nature. Permanent maintenance positions at a facility that operates year-round generally don't qualify for H-2A.
Can my H-2A status cover work across multiple farm locations?
Your H-2A petition is tied to the specific employer and worksite listed in the DOL job order. If an agricultural operation has multiple worksites, the employer must list all locations in the original filing. Working at a site not covered by your certified job order puts your status at risk, so confirm the exact worksites with your employer before the contract begins.
