Senior Level Highway Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a senior level highway engineer job?
Employers at this level look for demonstrated ownership of complex projects, not just participation in them. A strong candidate can point to specific highway or roadway projects they led from design through delivery, show familiarity with AASHTO standards and state DOT specifications, and speak to how they have guided junior engineers or coordinated across disciplines. Professional licensure as a PE is a significant advantage and often expected.
Which companies hire senior level highway engineers?
Companies hiring senior level highway engineers right now include Ardurra, Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, and GFT, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a mix of large engineering and infrastructure consulting firms, state and local transportation agencies, and construction companies managing major capital programs.
Are there remote senior level highway engineer jobs?
Yes, though most roles involve some field or client presence. About 17% of senior level highway engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that senior engineers can handle design review, stakeholder coordination, and project oversight tasks without being on-site every day, even if key milestones still require travel to project locations.
What makes a highway engineer role senior level?
Senior level highway engineer roles are defined by scope and ownership rather than task completion. Engineers at this level set technical direction on projects, make binding design and standards decisions, lead or mentor smaller teams of engineers and technicians, and are accountable for project outcomes rather than individual deliverables. They typically manage relationships with clients, agencies, or prime contractors and are expected to anticipate problems before they reach the field.
Which industries hire the most senior level highway engineers?
Senior Level highway engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Healthcare & Medical Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive hiring at this level because they manage high-value, long-duration infrastructure programs that require experienced engineers who can own technical quality and coordinate across large project teams from start to finish.
