Most hospital positions require at minimum the Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) credential, while clinical roles conducting independent assessments or therapy require the Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), which involves supervised hours and an additional exam. Texas also allows license reciprocity for candidates already licensed in other states.

Texas's large integrated health systems dominate hiring, and many operate multiple campuses across metros, creating openings at different seniority levels within the same organization.
Which Texas cities have the most hospital social worker jobs?

Houston leads because of the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, while Dallas and San Antonio support high volumes through their dense networks of Level I trauma centers, safety-net hospitals, and behavioral health facilities serving large urban and surrounding rural populations.

The most realistic entry path is pursuing a field placement or graduate internship at a Texas hospital during your MSW program, which frequently converts to a hire. Large systems such as Baylor Scott & White and UT Health often bring on new LMSW graduates into structured residency or fellowship tracks. Candidates coming from adjacent roles like medical case manager, crisis counselor, or patient navigator at a community health center are strong internal transfer candidates, and completing your LMSW licensure before graduation gives you a clear edge over unlicensed applicants.
