IT Manager Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a it manager job in Houston?
Focus your search on Houston's dominant sectors: energy, healthcare systems, and petrochemical operations, where IT leadership demand is consistently high. The Energy Corridor and Texas Medical Center are the two densest hiring hubs. Candidates who can demonstrate experience managing infrastructure for regulated industries, particularly oil and gas or clinical environments, have a clear edge over generalists in this market.
Which companies hire it managers in Houston?
Companies currently hiring it managers in Houston include McDermott, Lyte Fiber, and TAS Energy, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's employer mix skews toward large energy operators, integrated health networks, and engineering and construction firms, all of which maintain sizable internal IT departments requiring dedicated management.
Are there remote it manager jobs in Houston?
Yes, though it manager roles are less remote-friendly than individual contributor tech positions because they typically require on-site presence to oversee infrastructure, vendors, and teams. About 77% of it manager openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common at professional services and corporate headquarters rather than field-heavy energy or hospital operations.
How can I get a it manager job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is moving up from a senior systems administrator or IT team lead role within the energy or healthcare sectors, where internal promotions are common and employers value operational continuity. Houston's large hospital networks and mid-size oilfield services companies regularly develop technical staff into management, making them more accessible than major corporate headquarters. Earning a PMP or ITIL certification before applying strengthens candidacy noticeably in this market.
Which industries hire the most it managers in Houston?
Most it manager openings in Houston sit in Consulting & Professional Services, Education, and Manufacturing, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's concentration of integrated energy companies, petrochemical operators, and one of the country's largest medical complexes creates sustained, recurring demand for IT leadership that outpaces most comparably sized U.S. cities.
