Document your CI/CD skills formally before applying
Compile verifiable records of your experience with build pipelines, version control systems, and release automation tools. Designated sponsors evaluate training plans against your existing credentials, so gaps in documented technical proficiency can delay DS-2019 issuance.
Target host employers with structured engineering programs
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies actively hosting J-1 engineering professionals. Employers with formal onboarding tracks are far more likely to coordinate with a designated sponsor and execute the required training plan documentation.
Distinguish Trainee from Intern category before you apply
If you hold a degree and have at least one year of relevant post-graduation work experience, you qualify as a Trainee, not an Intern. Applying under the wrong category causes your DS-2019 application to be rejected by the designated sponsor organization.
Build a role-specific training plan with your host employer
Designated sponsors like CIEE or Cultural Vistas require a detailed Training Plan form outlining your learning objectives in build automation, deployment pipelines, and release coordination. Your host employer drafts this, so align on specifics before the sponsor submission.
Check whether the 2-year home residency rule applies to you
The Trainee and Research Scholar categories can trigger a two-year home residency requirement if your home country's government funded your exchange or if your role falls on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Confirm your status with the designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Verify your host employer's E-Verify enrollment early
Many designated sponsor organizations require host employers to be enrolled in E-Verify before issuing a DS-2019. Confirm enrollment status with your prospective employer during the offer stage, not after the training plan is signed, to avoid delays.

Find Build And Release Engineer JobsBuild And Release Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Build and Release Engineer role?
Most Build and Release Engineers enter on the Trainee category, which covers professionals with a relevant degree plus at least one year of post-graduation work experience in software engineering or related fields. Current students completing a degree program may qualify under the Intern category instead. The Research Scholar category applies only when the role is based at a university or research institution and involves a formal research component.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a Build and Release Engineer?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or IIE issue your DS-2019 form and are legally responsible for monitoring your exchange program compliance. Your host employer handles your day-to-day work assignments and co-develops the required training plan, but they are not your designated sponsor under J-1 regulations.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host J-1 Build and Release Engineers?
Search Migrate Mate for Build and Release Engineer roles at companies experienced with international exchange professionals. Not all employers understand the J-1 host-employer obligations, so targeting organizations with prior J-1 hosting experience reduces friction during the training plan and DS-2019 process. Approaching employers who already coordinate with designated sponsors shortens your path to a signed offer.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement affect Build and Release Engineers on J-1?
It can. The requirement is triggered if your home country's government funded your exchange program, if you received a U.S. government grant, or if your specific occupation appears on your country's Exchange Visitor Skills List. Build and release engineering roles in software infrastructure sometimes appear on these lists for certain countries. Your designated sponsor will assess whether the requirement applies based on your nationality, funding source, and role.
What does a J-1 training plan for a Build and Release Engineer need to include?
The training plan, completed on Form DS-7002, must detail your learning objectives across specific phases of work, such as configuring CI/CD pipelines, managing artifact repositories, coordinating release schedules, and troubleshooting deployment failures. It must identify measurable goals and supervisory check-ins. Your host employer and designated sponsor both sign the form, and it must demonstrate genuine skills acquisition rather than routine production work.
