ROLE OVERVIEW
We are offering a unique opportunity to learn Strategic Decision Support within the space and defense sector. You will work at the intersection of big data and federal policy, learning to build predictive models that identify where the market is moving before anyone else. This role provides a front-row seat to the Challenger Brand strategy, teaching you how to use data-driven insights to neutralize the advantages of larger legacy competitors.
THE WORK
-
Find the Undervalued Opportunities.
-
Analyze Spire's historical win/loss data from Salesforce to identify the profile of a winnable federal opportunity
- Cross-reference against the full federal market: pull budget justification documents (P-40s, R-2s), GovWin pipeline, and SAM.gov awards to find opportunities that match the win profile but haven't been prioritized yet
- Flag undervalued targets with high win probability the team isn't currently focused on
-
Deliver a force-ranked opportunity list with the analytical rationale behind every ranking
-
Build the Revenue Engine Model
-
Build a conversion model from Salesforce data, stage-by-stage probability, average cycle time, and deal velocity by agency type and capability area
- Produce a rolling revenue forecast by quarter, updated from live pipeline data
-
Model the gap: if the target is $X, what qualified pipeline is required? What activity levels? What accounts?
-
Decode the Federal Budget
-
Map federal appropriations and program budget lines for Spire's capability areas
- Identify growing budget lines and declining ones where Congress and the Pentagon are putting money, and where are they pulling back?
- Surface emerging programs and new starts that align with Spire capabilities before a formal solicitation exists
-
Deliver a budget signal report: the 10 federal programs where Spire should be investing time right now
-
Know the Competition
-
Map the competitive landscape by capability area, who is currently winning contract, programs and awards
- Pull SAM.gov contract award data to track competitor wins, contract values, and expiration dates
- Identify recompete targets: competitor-held contracts expiring in 12–24 months where Spire has a credible shot
-
Build a one-page competitive brief per capability area: who we're beating, who we're losing to, and the analytical case for why we win the next one
-
Tell The Story Behind the Data
-
Every analysis must be delivered with a clear 'so what' the 3–5 decisions leadership should make based on what the data shows
- Present findings to Federal Sales leadership weekly, not as a data dump, but as a structured argument for where to focus and why
- All models delivered in Excel or Power BI, documented so they outlast the internship
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in Finance, Economics, Data Science, Statistics, Business Analytics, or a related quantitative field
- Ability to work approximately 40 hours for the duration of the 8-week program
- Exceptional analytical instincts
- Strong Excel skills required; Python and Power BI are a significant plus
- Ability to turn complex analysis into a clear, concise argument for a non-technical audience
- Operates independently and moves fast
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience with CRM data cleanup, Salesforce administration, or SharePoint management
- Power BI or dashboard-building experience from coursework or a prior role
- Familiarity with federal government or B2B sales environments
- Evidence of building or owning a system
Spire operates a hybrid work model, and this position will require you to work a minimum of three days per week in the office.
Access to US export-controlled software and/or technology may be required for this role. If needed, Spire will arrange the necessary licenses—this is not something candidates need to have before applying.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Business Development Analyst
Frame your training plan around measurable outcomes
Your DS-2019 requires a detailed training plan signed by both your host employer and designated sponsor. Tie each phase to specific business development competencies: market sizing, lead qualification, CRM workflows. Vague plans get flagged for revision and delay your program start date.
Verify host employers hold prior J-1 experience
Not every company has worked with a designated sponsor before. Ask hiring managers whether they've hosted J-1 visa Trainees or Interns previously. First-time host employers require additional onboarding with the sponsor organization, which can add several weeks to your start timeline.
Search for J-1-aligned roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate lets you filter U.S. employers and Business Development Analyst openings by visa sponsorship compatibility, so you're targeting companies already oriented toward exchange visitor programs rather than cold-applying and explaining the J-1 structure from scratch.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee category eligibility
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program abroad, you qualify for the J-1 Intern category. If you've graduated within the past 12 months or have relevant professional experience, you fall under Trainee. Applying under the wrong category results in DS-2019 rejection by your designated sponsor.
Confirm the role avoids the two-year home residency requirement
Certain J-1 participants are subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement under INA Section 212(e), which prevents immediate H-1B visa or green card applications after your program ends. USCIS can confirm whether your specific situation triggers this requirement before you accept an offer.
Align your offer letter language with DOL training standards
DOL requires that J-1 Trainee roles provide genuine skill development rather than routine production work. Your offer letter and training plan must describe rotation across business development functions. Language that reads as standard employment rather than structured training can prompt sponsor pushback during DS-2019 review.
Business Development Analyst J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Business Development Analyst roles?
Most Business Development Analyst positions fall under the J-1 Trainee category if you have a relevant degree and up to one year of post-graduation work experience, or under the Intern category if you're currently enrolled in a degree program abroad. The Trainee category supports training programs up to 18 months in the Business, Commerce, and Finance occupational field, which directly covers business development functions.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this role, the employer or a third-party organization?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the hiring employer. The employer acts as your host, providing the workplace and training. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, approves your training plan, monitors program compliance, and serves as your point of contact with the State Department throughout your exchange program.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Business Development Analyst?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, letting you identify U.S. companies and Business Development Analyst openings that align with J-1 sponsorship structures. Targeting employers already familiar with exchange visitor programs is far more efficient than applying broadly and spending early interviews educating hiring teams about how the J-1 host arrangement works.
Can a Business Development Analyst role trigger the two-year home residency requirement?
It depends on your specific circumstances, not the job title itself. The two-year home-country physical presence requirement under INA Section 212(e) applies based on factors like government funding of your program or whether your home country has a skills-shortage designation. USCIS reviews these conditions individually. Clarify your situation before accepting an offer if you're planning to transition to H-1B or a green card afterward.
What does a J-1 training plan need to include for a Business Development role?
Your training plan must describe a structured, phase-based program covering distinct business development competencies, such as market research methodology, sales pipeline management, competitive analysis, and client engagement strategy. Each phase needs defined learning objectives, supervision details, and a timeline. The designated sponsor reviews this plan and will reject submissions that resemble a standard employment job description rather than a genuine development curriculum.
