Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Business Manager
Translate your credentials into U.S. business terminology
Your foreign business degree or management experience needs to map clearly onto U.S. job titles. Cross-reference your background against the O*NET occupation profile for Business and Operations Managers to identify the exact competencies U.S. host employers expect to see.
Target host employers with established J-1 training programs
Multinational corporations, university business departments, and nonprofit management organizations frequently serve as J-1 host sites. Employers already running structured management training programs are far more likely to coordinate the DS-2019 process with a designated sponsor than those encountering J-1 for the first time.
Distinguish Trainee from Intern before you apply
The J-1 Trainee category is for professionals with a degree plus one year of experience, or five years of work experience in business management. Applying to Intern-category programs when you meet Trainee criteria wastes time and risks misclassification on your DS-2019.
Use Migrate Mate to find roles aligned with J-1 sponsorship
Searching general job boards surfaces roles where employers have no J-1 host experience. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Business Manager positions at employers already familiar with exchange visitor programs, cutting out the cold outreach to HR teams who don't know what a DS-2019 is.
Build a training plan before your offer letter is signed
Designated sponsors like Cultural Vistas or AIPT require a formal training plan document before issuing your DS-2019. Draft a phase-by-phase breakdown of management competencies you'll develop so your host employer can co-sign it the moment an offer is extended.
Check the 2-year home residency requirement before accepting
If your J-1 program is funded by your home government or if your home country is on the State Department's skills list, you may face a 2-year home residency requirement before switching to H-1B or a green card pathway. Confirm your funding source with the designated sponsor before accepting any host offer.

Find Business Manager JobsBusiness Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Business Manager role?
Most Business Manager candidates qualify under the J-1 Trainee category, which covers international professionals with a business-related degree plus at least one year of post-degree work experience, or a minimum of five years of relevant management experience without a degree. Current students completing degree programs may qualify under the J-1 Intern category instead. The designated sponsor determines which category applies based on your documentation.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if the employer is just a host?
The visa sponsor in J-1 is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE issue the DS-2019 form, monitor your program compliance, and serve as the official sponsor of record. Your host employer provides the work environment and co-signs the training plan, but they do not hold sponsoring authority over your J-1 status.
How do I find Business Manager host employers open to J-1 candidates?
Most general job postings don't specify J-1 compatibility, so filtering by that criterion manually is slow and unreliable. Migrate Mate lets you search for Business Manager roles at employers already familiar with exchange visitor programs, so you're not spending weeks educating HR departments about a visa category they've never processed before.
Can a Business Manager on J-1 transition to an H-1B afterward?
Yes, but only if you're not subject to the 2-year home residency requirement under INA Section 212(e). That requirement applies if your J-1 exchange was funded by your home government, your home country's government, or if your occupation appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List. If the requirement applies, you must return home for two years or obtain a waiver before an H-1B or immigrant visa is approvable.
What does the J-1 training plan need to include for a Business Manager position?
The training plan must outline specific management competencies you'll develop in the U.S., broken into phases with measurable objectives, supervision details, and a timeline. Designated sponsors require this before issuing the DS-2019. For Business Manager roles, plans typically cover areas like budget management, team leadership, operations oversight, and U.S. regulatory compliance, all tied to skills you cannot obtain in your home country.
