Verify your RRT credential transfers
Some states require you to pass the NBRC credentialing exams before a host facility will extend an offer. Confirm your home-country respiratory therapy credentials are recognized and factor exam timelines into your start date planning.
Target hospitals with J-1 trainee track records
Large academic medical centers and health systems routinely host J-1 visa Trainee exchange visitors in clinical allied health roles. Prioritize facilities with dedicated international clinical training programs, since they already have the internal compliance infrastructure for hosting.
Search verified J-1 roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Certified Respiratory Therapist openings by employers that have a history of supporting J-1 exchange visitors, saving time you'd otherwise spend cold-contacting HR departments unfamiliar with the Trainee program category.
Confirm the 2-year residency requirement applies to you
J-1 Trainees funded by their home-country government or whose field is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement before changing to most U.S. work visas. Check your DS-2019 notation before accepting any offer.
Align your training plan with respiratory therapy scope
Your designated sponsor requires a detailed Training or Internship Placement Plan (Form DS-7002) signed by both you and the host facility. The plan must map your objectives to specific respiratory therapy competencies, not just list job duties.
Negotiate program duration before the host submits paperwork
J-1 Trainee programs are capped at 18 months for most allied health fields. If your credentialing or training goals require longer, discuss a phased structure with the host facility and designated sponsor before the DS-2019 is issued.
Certified Respiratory Therapist J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Certified Respiratory Therapists?
Most internationally trained Certified Respiratory Therapists enter as J-1 Trainees if they have completed their professional degree and have some field experience, or as J-1 Interns if they are currently enrolled in a respiratory therapy program abroad. The Trainee category fits post-graduation clinical training at a U.S. host facility, while the Intern category is restricted to current students or those who graduated within the past 12 months.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a respiratory therapist role?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT, not the hospital or clinic where you work. That facility is the host employer. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, approves your training plan, and monitors your program compliance throughout the exchange. You and the host employer cannot create the J-1 sponsorship independently without a designated sponsor.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect respiratory therapists?
It may. If your J-1 program is financed by your home-country government, or if your home country has listed respiratory therapy on its Exchange Visitor Skills List, you'll be subject to the two-year requirement. This means you must return home for two years before obtaining an H-1B visa, L-1 visa, or immigrant visa. Review your DS-2019 and the State Department's Skills List before making any long-term U.S. plans.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 respiratory therapy trainees?
Migrate Mate lets you search Certified Respiratory Therapist roles filtered by employers familiar with J-1 exchange visitor arrangements, which is far more efficient than reaching out to facilities that may never have hosted an international trainee. Academic medical centers, VA hospitals, and large health systems are generally the most experienced hosts, but availability varies significantly by region and facility size.
Can I sit for the NBRC exams while on a J-1 Trainee visa?
Yes, you can take NBRC credentialing exams while in the United States on J-1 status. However, the J-1 Trainee program does not authorize independent employment, so any clinical work must occur within your approved training plan at the designated host facility. If your exam results allow you to practice at a higher scope, the host facility and designated sponsor must update your DS-7002 training plan to reflect the change.
