Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Clinical Assistant
Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
Clinical Assistant roles vary widely in scope. Before applying, confirm your foreign degree or diploma is evaluated by a recognized credential assessment agency so your designated sponsor can verify it meets the J-1 Trainee or Intern category requirements.
Build a structured training plan before outreach
Host employers need a detailed Training or Internship Placement Plan (Form DS-7002) before a designated sponsor issues your DS-2019. Draft learning objectives tied to clinical workflows, patient support tasks, or diagnostic procedures specific to your target facility type.
Target host employers with existing J-1 host agreements
Hospitals, outpatient clinics, and academic medical centers that have hosted J-1 trainees before already have agreements with designated sponsors. Search Migrate Mate to find clinical roles at employers with J-1 sponsorship history, saving weeks of sponsor-enrollment negotiations.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
If your country of nationality or last legal residence is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if your program is government-funded, you may face the two-year home residency requirement before changing to certain other visa statuses. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before accepting a host offer.
Request DS-2019 issuance timeline from your designated sponsor
Sponsors such as CIEE or Cultural Vistas process DS-2019 applications on their own schedules. Ask for the current processing window before you commit to a host employer start date, since clinical facilities often set hard onboarding deadlines that conflict with sponsor timelines.
Verify your host employer's E-Verify enrollment status
Some clinical facilities require E-Verify enrollment to complete onboarding for exchange visitors. Confirm enrollment before finalizing your host agreement to avoid delays once your DS-2019 arrives and you need to complete Form I-9 employment verification.

Find Clinical Assistant JobsClinical Assistant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Clinical Assistant role?
The answer depends on where you are in your career. If you're currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program, the Intern category applies. If you've graduated within the past 12 months and have relevant post-secondary training, the Trainee category is the right fit. Both categories require a detailed training plan and a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor to issue your DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a Clinical Assistant position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your clinical employer. Organizations like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT issue your DS-2019 form and monitor program compliance. The hospital, clinic, or health system where you work is your host employer. These are two separate relationships, and you must secure both before your program begins.
How do I find clinical employers that are already set up for J-1 hosting?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. clinical employers with J-1 sponsorship experience. Facilities that have hosted exchange visitors before have existing agreements with designated sponsors, which shortens your setup time significantly. Cold outreach to employers unfamiliar with J-1 hosting often stalls because they don't know how to engage a designated sponsor or structure a training plan.
What does the Form DS-7002 require for a Clinical Assistant trainee?
Form DS-7002 is the Training or Internship Placement Plan that your host employer and designated sponsor complete together. For Clinical Assistant roles, it must describe specific learning objectives tied to clinical support tasks, such as patient intake procedures, specimen handling, or electronic health record workflows. Vague descriptions like 'general clinical observation' are typically rejected by sponsors during their review process.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Clinical Assistant J-1 holders?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement applies if your home country is on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, if your J-1 program is government-funded, or if you received graduate medical training in the U.S. on J-1 status. It bars you from changing to H-1B or a green card until you return home for two years or obtain a waiver. Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before signing a host agreement.
