Verify your credential equivalency before applying
U.S. host organizations will assess whether your social work, psychology, or counseling degree meets state licensure standards. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member service before outreach so you can confirm equivalency upfront.
Match your career stage to the right J-1 category
If you graduated within the past year and are still building clinical hours, the J-1 Intern category applies. Professionals with at least one year of post-degree experience in case management should target the J-1 Trainee category instead.
Search for J-1 compatible roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by clinical or social services roles that align with J-1 Trainee or Research Scholar programs. Migrate Mate surfaces U.S. employers that work with international professionals, so you can focus outreach on hosts already familiar with exchange visitor requirements.
Ask host employers about their designated sponsor relationship
The hiring organization is your host, not your visa sponsor. Before accepting an offer, confirm they have an existing relationship with a DOS-designated sponsor, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, who will issue your DS-2019 and training plan.
Build a structured training plan around clinical competencies
The J-1 Trainee program requires a formal training plan detailing the skills you'll develop. Frame your plan around case management competencies like crisis intervention, care coordination, and discharge planning to satisfy the sponsor's documentation requirements.
Check the 2-year home residency requirement early
Clinical Case Manager roles at government-funded agencies or positions supported by a U.S. government grant may trigger the two-year home residency requirement. Review the J-1 exchange agreement and your DS-2019 remarks field before committing to any offer.

Find Clinical Case Manager JobsClinical Case Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Clinical Case Manager role?
It depends on your career stage. If you're a current student or recent graduate completing a supervised practicum, the J-1 Intern category typically applies. If you hold a degree and have at least one year of professional experience in case management, social work, or a related behavioral health field, the J-1 Trainee category is the appropriate fit. Research Scholar applies primarily to academics or clinicians engaged in formal research, not direct service roles.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if I'm hired by a hospital or nonprofit?
The hiring organization is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. Your J-1 visa is sponsored by a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, which issues your DS-2019 form, approves your training plan, and monitors compliance throughout your exchange. The host employer works with the designated sponsor but cannot issue a DS-2019 independently unless they hold their own DOS designation.
Can I find Clinical Case Manager roles that are already open to J-1 exchange visitors?
Yes. Use Migrate Mate to search for Clinical Case Manager and behavioral health positions at U.S. employers that work with international professionals. Because J-1 sponsorship involves a designated sponsor rather than direct employer filing, identifying hosts that have prior experience with exchange visitors saves significant time during the offer and training plan approval process.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to case management positions?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement, also called the 212(e) requirement, applies if your program is government-funded, if your home country has placed your occupation on its exchange visitor skills list, or if your J-1 is funded by a U.S. or foreign government grant. Clinical roles at federally funded community health centers or state mental health agencies are more likely to trigger 212(e) than positions at private health systems. Check the remarks field on your DS-2019 and confirm with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
What documentation does my host employer need to set up J-1 Trainee sponsorship?
Your host employer and designated sponsor will need a completed Form DS-7002 Training or Internship Placement Plan, which outlines the specific clinical skills you'll develop, your supervision structure, and your weekly schedule. The host also provides proof of adequate supervision capacity and, in most cases, a signed host organization agreement with the designated sponsor. Preparing a detailed description of your proposed case management duties before outreach helps speed up this process.
