The postdoc will work within a collaborated team of experimental and computational experts from KU and UNL.
Job Description
Job Duties:
- Conduct the computational and theoretical research on magnetic and topological properties in van der Waals materials using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, tight-binding and machine learning methods.
- Provide theoretical predictions to guide experiments, and atomic-scale physical understanding to experimental observations.
- Publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals.
- Presenting work at local and national/international scientific conferences.
Specific Job Duties (percentage of time)
- 90% – computational and theoretical research. Provide theory support to experiments. Documentation, presentation and publication of research results.

Align your CV to U.S. clinical trial standards
Format your credentials around ICH-GCP certification, protocol management experience, and IRB familiarity. U.S. host institutions evaluating Research Scholar or Trainee applicants look for documentation that maps directly to FDA-regulated trial phases.
Distinguish Trainee from Research Scholar eligibility
The Trainee category suits professionals within five years of their degree or last full-time employment in clinical research. Research Scholar applies to established researchers affiliated with an academic or research institution abroad. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019.
Target host institutions with active IND portfolios
Academic medical centers, NIH-funded research networks, and contract research organizations running investigational new drug studies are the most consistent hosts for Clinical Research Manager J-1 placements. Use Migrate Mate to filter for U.S. employers actively hosting J-1 research professionals.
Confirm the 2-year home residency requirement early
If your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or your program is government-funded, you'll face a two-year home residency requirement before switching to most work visas. Identify this before accepting an offer, not after.
Get your training plan approved before your start date
Your designated sponsor, whether CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or another State Department-authorized organization, must sign off on a formal training plan before issuing the DS-2019. Build four to six weeks into your timeline for plan review and sponsor approval.
Verify your host employer's willingness to sign the DS-2019 packet
Some research employers confuse J-1 host obligations with H-1B visa employer sponsorship. Your host must complete a training plan, designate a supervisor, and cooperate with the sponsor organization's compliance monitoring throughout your program.
Clinical Research Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Clinical Research Manager role?
It depends on your career stage. The Research Scholar category fits academics and scientists affiliated with a foreign institution who are conducting research at a U.S. host. The Trainee category applies to professionals within five years of graduation or last full-time employment who are developing clinical research management skills under structured supervision. Senior managers without an active foreign institutional affiliation typically qualify under Trainee.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Clinical Research Manager position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, and IIE issue the DS-2019 form and take legal responsibility for your exchange program. Your U.S. research institution or CRO is the host employer. These are two separate entities, and confusing them is one of the most common errors applicants make when evaluating offers.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Clinical Research Manager?
Most clinical research employers don't advertise J-1 hosting status in job postings. Migrate Mate is built to surface U.S. employers and roles that align with J-1 sponsorship for research and clinical professionals, so you can identify hosts before committing to an application process that may not lead anywhere.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to clinical research positions?
It can. If your home country is on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List and clinical research management falls within a listed occupation, or if your position is funded by your home government or the U.S. government, the two-year home residency requirement applies. You'd need to return home or obtain a waiver before changing to an H-1B or immigrant visa. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Can a J-1 Clinical Research Manager transition to an H-1B after the program ends?
Yes, if you're not subject to the two-year home residency requirement, or if you've received a waiver. Clinical Research Manager roles often qualify as H-1B specialty occupations given the degree and expertise required. Your host employer would need to file an H-1B petition, which is subject to the annual cap and lottery. Timing your J-1 program end date around H-1B filing windows is a practical consideration worth planning for in advance.
